I finally got my 1954 331 Hemi up on a home made run stand and I know it was out of a 6volt car . I "THINK" it might have been Positive ground . ??? My question is do I need to hook the negative cable to the starter and the positive to the block? Id like to use a 12 volt battery and replace the coil with a standard one from the 6v that was on it that I think is positive + ground . Do I need a different starter to do this? have seen were guys were running the 6v starter with 12 volts m I assume it would have been in a negative ground set up ?? I have not hooked a coil up yet . I was assuming I could just change the coil form 6v to 12 volts ? I thought I knew every thing until today LOL Thanks
I converted a bunch of positive ground 6 volt International tractors to 12 volts and always used the 6 volt positive ground starter with no problems. Just change your coil to a 12 volt type and make sure the (-) on the coil goes to the points.
Just add a by pass resister and run the 6v coil. I have done this on old farm tractors when change the to 12v and alternators. Many with thousands of hours on them
I have a 12 volt coil on hand and it will go in a 12v car if its a usable engine so Id rather work out any bugs on the stand. Then no need to buy anything else or wait for it . As soon as my $11 amazon electric fuel pump arrives for the run stand ill be about ready to see if it will run . the starter spins the engine the correct direction and I'm working on the wiring and key switch tonight . If it will run and be usable as is Ill add a intake and some stuff and likely put it in a channeled 30 model A fender less PU with a 32 shell I have Thanks
Hooked up a 12v coil negative ground . Cobbled in a Amazon $11 fuel pump and turned it on. No flooding accelerator pump actually worked . Hit the starter button and it turned over about three times and started and idled after sitting at least 18 years. No death knock or any really bad signs had oil pressure. Time to get a radiator on it and see if it holds coolant. Might have a winner.
