    hey guys
I'm tring to find a paint code formula for my 54 dodge indy pacecar ..

My local auto paint store says they have no reference on this color on there computer or books .. where do you suggest I start looking ?
here is the reference codes i did fine for ditzler paint ppg . so there was a paint code back in the day. all I need is the paint formula to mix it up. .
    Thanks !

    Hey John,

I'd suggest you check out as many on line Mopar sites, as well as Indy history -pace car sites for a clue on that true colour formula.

You may hit '' paydirt'' and find a formula, only to find that that colour can no longer be mixed with today's toners and bases.:( The coloue as I recall it, looks like ''margarine'' and shouldn't be to tough to mix " if '' a coulour chip can be found.

    thanks pimpin
I did a search on the 54 dodge pacecar and found who the driver was and that there were several 54 dodge convertibles and even a 4 door royal on the field for all the promotors too to drive around . there was not just one indy pacecar is what i read .
    on the color :
I have seen two other 54 pacecars restored and the shade of yellow they picked is way too yellow or brite..
my original 54 pacecar color............ is more of a pale yellow. not a brite yellow or even mustard color as people may think... the interior seat and door panels color is a mustard color though. here is a pic of my dash and it is original paint ... not brite or mustard color, the fire wall is same color under the hood . (untouched .. original stock )
I may have to just have the color eye matched. [IMG]

Have someone with a paint color camera take a few hits and get you the color.

  8. The camera will not produce a mix formula for the the original code it will read the spectrum of the original paint and give you the formula for the closest modern colour.

Have your paint store contact their supplier. Every paint company can match your color, given the name and number. Even if they are not in the catalog. All paint companies have formulas going back as far as the 1920s.

my local auto paint store told me they did not have record of it in there system. I came them the name of the color , the code and ppg's paint code .. they told me no can do. what's with that?.. maybe some lazy people there that don't what to go thru the effort to find it.
    wow.
anyway ...........I will take a panel / trim piece over this week and see what they can do with the camera.

    Hey dodge59,

A colour match produced from taking a ''read'' off an actual painted part, and producing that match with spray out cards will yield your closest match. The photo cameras only produce matches from toners and bases in their program, not all toners/bases available today:(

I did not think those cameras were right on the nuts will matches .. the eye match is probally the best bet with spray out samples like you say.

went to two auto paint stores today and both said ........could not find a formula for that color , there are paint codes and numbers , but they are not in the system anymore to pull up and most formulas were lacquer back in 54 . .. one store said they can only shoot the color with the gun but world still need to adjust the color some .......... other store said they could eye match it . I will give them a sample to eye match then..
I did see the pacecar yellow paint chip code 556 in there book... late 1954 -55 and it matched the sample I bought along to show them .
there was another 1955 color that was real close to pacecar yellow called fantasy yellow> ppg number 80729 just a tad lighter . anyway ...... the pacecar yellow color is all my itself .
so.......I now know what is available and the route I will go.

I'm painting the 54 dodge pacecar with ppg deltron. bccc.

thanks for your help guys !
