The hoods with the "glass" window were factory showroom display parts, to show off the NEW OHV V8 Engine, that were shipped with a lighting set and engine chrome package to all Ford dealers in the USA and Canada at a cost of $450 plus freight. So that is how many of them were made. Almost none were used as the company instructions dictated painting the hood to match a car in stock, preferably a tudor or convertible showroom model, then install the chrome valve covers, engine front cover, pulleys, fan and aircleaner. The light set included a left and right light bar with sockets for muti-colored lights to be mounted under the display hood.

Here is some info for you guys looking for a new reproduction top.
Pollard Plastic out of Dallas, Texas reproduces green tinted glass tops for $850.00. ($750.00 for the top and $100.00 to ship)
If you want a custom color I believe there is an up charge of around $200.00 – $250.00 dollars.

I have a little bit of experience with Glasstops, so perhaps I can add to the conversation.
As already indicated, Pollard plastics still makes them: good people when I chatted with them. All 1954 Glasstops are the same size and different from 1955 and 1956. By all I mean, by descending production numbers; Ford Skyliner; Mercury Sunvalley; Monarch Sunvalley; and Meteor Skyliner. The 1954 models are all 60F. The tops for 1955 and 1956 Glasstops are all the same and the cars are designated model 64B. No Glasstops were produced in Canada after 1954 and no Mercury Glasstops were produced after 1955 (only a low production Ford in 1956).
To replace a glasstop you also need the rubber gasket: just make sure you get the right year. All the Glasstops can have a problem with the factory-unfinished steel glasstop retainers that hold the rubber down and the stainless molding on the roof. The retainers rust away to nothing in some cases and I have never found anyone that makes them.
People do make the shades for the Glasstops. The zippered shade was a field upgrade with the Mercury after complains about the heat. By the way, contrary to popular belief, Ford did offer a zippered shade very late in production for 1954 skyliners (like the sunvalley) to replace the rather clumsy button-in style of shade.
I have included a photo of 2 1954 Glasstops. The 1954 Meteor has a factory installed Mercury Flathead 255 (not a Y-block) and Mercury Dash. The 1954 Mercury Sunvalley pictured is under restoration and going back to its original Bloomfield Green over Yosemite Yellow (originally a California car).
    Cheers.

The 52-54 Ford hoods are the same and the hood hinges interchange with 52-54 Mercurys 52-53 fenders interchange with some minor drilling for mounting the grille,in '54 when Ford brought out the Y-Block and IFS suspension that changed the mounting of the fenders and the inner fender panels if you are willing to do some redrilling and cutting you can make things fit,if you are wanting a Merc front on your Ford or a 52-53 Ford on a '54 it would be best to get the whole front clip with the exception of the parts I posted above that interchange. This build may be of interest:http://1954ford.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1176

My father in law has a 1954 Sun Valley in Colombia, South America. It has been garaged since 1980 when the alternator went out. Can't get parts there. Are these rare enough to pay the shipping charges to have it brought to the US?
