I am working on a 1954 GMC pickup. It has been a family project since 1964, and is finally getting close to maybe someday getting done. I found this forum looking for help putting the A/C under the dash. I am still looking. The '54 GMC dash was only used in the GMC for 1954 and the first half of 1955. It is very different from the Chevy, and has less room under it. Does anyone have experience putting A/C inside/under the dash? I checked with Vintage Air, and they do not have a "sure fit" for this year GMC. If someone has done this to their truck, what was special, was it just the vents below the dash? or was there something special about mounting the A/C unit inside/behind the dash? Thanks for taking the time to read this.
What VA does have is an unit that looks like a 60's unit that mounts in the middle of the dash for $299. I'd look into that.
Hey Neil...I used a Old Air Products unit in my '48 Chevy. I know it's not a GMC, but I bet it will work. Completely concealed behind dash with only 2 vents showing.
This is why I am asking the specific question. Here are a couple of pics of my dash. Now you can see what the difference is in the dash.
Ok, let me be very clear. I understand about the various controls and vents. What I want to know is what about behind the dash for the main A/C unit. Any problems with getting it to fit. As you can see in the pics above, there is several inches less space behind the dash in the GMC than in the chevy. Will the VA mini fit?
