MC is leaking brake fluid, 1st try with a rebuild kit to no avail. The reservoir is pitted from moisture therefore i need to replace the whole thing. I got it priced at NAPA for $200 and also searched online and found two MC's when available on rockauto.com. One is priced $90 and the other is $190. There are photos of each and the one that looks exactly like the one we took off is the $190 one. My question is what is the difference between the two and why the $100 price difference.... does anyone know? I've included links of each. Thanks in advance for your help! Really just wanna drive it already! It's a Savoy by the way.

I went through this on my '53 Desoto. Should be the same parts. Anyways, DeSoto in 1953 had two different Master Cylinder options. The smaller one had a 15/16 bore, and was for your "lighter" cars. The larger had 1 1/8" bore, and was meant for their wagon model. I have a NOS rebuild kit for the larger of the two, it was in my glovebox when I bought the car. If you wanna take another shot at rebuilding it I'll give it to you, just shoot me the shipping cost.

Another option would be taking your existing master cylinder to a local machine shop and have it sleeved. In the end, this may cost more than the $200 new part.

Oh, and going by the pictures in the links you posted. There is a HUGE difference between those two parts. As you can see in the first link the master cylinder doubles at the clutch and brake pedal mount.

That makes sense because the larger one looks like the one I took off yesterday, which attaches to the brake and clutch. I have a rebuilt kit for that one, but it's the inside of the reservoir that is causing the problem. Looks like I might just have to bite the bullet on this one, but I was really hoping there was a less expensive option to buying a $200 part.

Hey guys, the top cylinder info (#30914) is the kind that bolts to the frame rail and holds the Pedal Pivot also. The lower one (#964576) is a firewall mount. You really don't have a choice here. Yours is either a FLOOR mounted deal or a FIREWALL mounted deal. PERIOD! That will make your desicion much easier. Butch.
P.S. If your car has a late drivetrain with an automatic trans and you have the floor/frame mount, we manufacture a new Pedal Assy that bolts into the stock location holes on the frame rail and has a new Dual Master Cyl settup. See it at www.butchscoolstuff.com.

I ended up having the old cylinder honed out and re-sleeved by a friend of mine who runs a metal fabricating shop.. good as new!

  7. Good news! I had done one some years ago on an old lawn tractor master... same concept. The hardest part was holding the master squarely so it could be bored, wound up milling a couple of flats on the casting.
