I am going to try installing PW in my vicky.I have all the pieces to do so.what I need is a complete factory wiring diagram showing factory location for mounting circuit breaker also from CB to relays and switches bear in mind this is a factory setup not aftermarket.I have partial drawing showing colour codes but that is about it.when I got it years ago all the wiring was in tatters so colours are long gone but if I can get a complete factory diagram I will either buy repro wires or make my own.there are ton of wires so it will be a lot easier to do with proper factory diagram or diagrams.thanks in advance Barry 54-55-56 4 door should be same as to colour codes and routing to relays
This is a good little book and tells you everything you need to know about Power seats http://www.ebay.com/itm/1954-FORD-S...anuals_Literature&hash=item4ab8abf5d2&vxp=mtr Not my auction but I have one.
I appreciate that tip but I spent a couple of hours today and got them all working not as bad as I thought.now the one thing I realized I dont have is the wire guards that mount on door with screws.I am sure that 54-59 including tbird would work.I would still like to know where the circuit breaker mounts.I have a large collection of ford books and service letters and product letters including the full set of those.but none show the routing so I am going to route the rear wires through the rockers as I am sure this is what they would have done.again I appreciate your reply.when I find a seat they will come in handy.now to find the guards if anyone knows where to find them I would like to hear.
The '54 Merc service manual harness layout shows the circuit breaker in the under dash area to the left of the steering wheel. The rear wires do go through the rockers. I don't imagine Ford would be substantially different.
I have factory power windows and seat in my '54 Ford Convertible. The circuit breaker for the power windows and seat is mounted on the upper sheet metal of the left (driver's side) kick panel. I am unsure of what part you are referring to when you mention that you are missing the "wire guards". Please explain what you mean. If you purchase reproduction wiring harnesses for the windows they will come with excellent color coded wiring diagrams. Alan S. Freeman
Hi Alan as to the wire guards what I mean is the piece that has 2 screws that attach to the door to protect the wires and keep them from being pinched when opening and closing the door.from pictures I have seen over the years they appear to be a semi crescent shape and appear to go into the a pillar.the one thing I am not sure is if they go into the hinge pocket or if they use a hole just for them.now I will say is that the pictures were taken from overhead so hard to tell.the pictures were of 56 cars but I ***ume that they would have used the same on 54s.but you know what they say about ***ume.as to the wires the colours would be helpful but I figured out where they go but to make my own I think my biggest obstacle will be finding a heavy enough gauge that I can make a loom from that will not be too bulky.I have checked RI and Macs Macs prices are quite a lot cheaper hopefully that does not mean a lighter gauge.if you would not mind taking a few pictures of the solenoid mounting and where they tap into the power for it.meaning did they run a wire from start solenoid or tap into fuse panel on firewall the pictures I have show them running from start solenoid but .also picture of where the wires run from door to a pillar.mounting circuit breaker on kick panel makes sense and will make it easier to make harness as to length of wires etc.I also need to make a retainer for master switch they have them available for the singles but I have not seen them for master.from pictures I may be able to mount master switch using the same spot where the winder is now hopefully the same for singles.the next step will be getting the nerve to cut the opening for master.speaking of cutting in your case drilling did you take the plunge pun intended and drill hole for your spotlight yet?I hope the pictures I posted helped to show how critical the hole is for clearance on inside.I would very much appreciate pics if you do not mind also anything I may be overlooking.
thanks Dobie for your input as Alan has confirmed the mounting of circuit breaker as to routing to rear that was the way I imagined them doing as it makes sense to keep them from being pinched running them that way.as I said in earlieir post I have a 40 year collection of ford literature but do not recall having power seat and window wiring diagrams other than the small red books but nothing that shows the entire routing as they were more for trouble shooting and concentrate on that.but thanks to sites and people like this a lot of info available.again thank you and Alan and lest I forget a big thanks to Jeff for providing a forum for us here and other sites he is on
thought I should post a couple of pics to show what I started with.as you can see I cut a lot of bare wire off to figure it out and try to not have them short out.on some wires there were remnants of colour others it was none existent just bare wire.the wires going into motor pose another problem.I may have to open them and rewire.that can be fun getting them back together as to getting the brushes back over armature having never having one of these apart.I wish I had another one too practice on I have a couple of 60s motors I may take apart and hope they will allow me to re***emble.the joy of attempting a new challenge in over 50 years of working on cars I have found attempting something new to be either satisfying or frustrating.but if you do not try you learn nothing.being self taught I have experienced both.
That **** looks familiar lol Real satisfaction comes from overcoming the frustration.. Good luck with your project
The '54 used two spring type clips to hold the wires to the door hinges so no screws are involved. I know that mine are correct as this car had factory power windows (not later add ons). I will see about the pics but I am very busy right now at work as I just got back from 2 weeks vacation. Alan
I would appreciate that Alan being retired I am on permanent vacation at times.when you say springs that could be why I cant find them I spent 3 hours today going through all the books and literature I have.found pics of 54 merc but same as ford.in that they only show wires to each part but I think as Brodie said and I ***umed that they route thru rockers which answers that question.also on solenoid it looks like it mounts on firewall picture did not show as to left or right of fuse block.looking forward to your pics of spring clips and solenoid.I really appreciate your help.
54Vicky...send me a PM with your email address and I will try to email you some pics tomorrow of the solenoid, the fuse block and the spring wire clips for the hinges. Alan
thank you very much Stig that is exactly what i pictured in my mind I thought they used a similar piece in 54.but Alan has an original 54 with PW and they used a different method I feel they may have had problems with 54 and came out with this method.thank you again for taking the time posting the pics hopefully they will help anyone needing them measurements also very helpful. Barry
just to update after waiting for new repro wiring and a few other parts finally got them installed.thanks to Alan Freeman and the pics and info on circuit breaker location he sent also wiring diagrams.if not for Alan's help they probably would have been back on shelf.biggest decision I had was cutting the upholstery panel for master switch.one thing I need to order is the constant duty solenoid as when I unpacked I found they had removed the top of it why not sure as it was clean and contacts perfect.on the solenoid I googled the ford number on it and found nothing.that is why I will put new one in rather than ***ume it is constant duty.again thank you Alan and others for replying to my post
I am glad that the window setup worked out for you. On the power window solenoid, don't let anyone tell you that a starter solenoid (which looks identical) will work. A starter solenoid is rated as "intermittent duty" whereas the window solenoid needs to be "continuous duty" rated. If you use a starter solenoid it will burn up real quickly. A seller on Ebay right now is trying to pawn off a starter solenoid by claiming that it will also work on power windows. Not so. Cole Hersee and RBM made those original solenoids for Ford. Until a few years ago Cole Hersee still made a 6 volt continuous duty solenoid that looked just like the original. I managed to find one to use on my own car at a heavy equipment parts dealer in Long Beach, CA. although it had been discontinued at the time. Cole Hersee still makes a 6 volt continuous duty solenoid that looks like the original except that it has an extra wire terminal on it. It may still work for you. Check it out on their website. Another idea....if all you need to make yours work is a new metal cover, try using a starter solenoid cover. It should fit. The only difference will be the Ford part # stamped on the cover. If you need one I think that I have some extra original starter solenoids around here. Alan S. Freeman
You guys had me worried with all of the talk about solenoids.. (I don't have one).. Looks like a 54 and later thing but probably a good idea.
since last update I have soldered the lid on and installed.as to the need I am not sure if Ford put them in to reduce possible problem.I do not feel the amperes draw from the motors requires a solenoid or not. I put it on not wanting to risk a problem.an added benefit to having it is that it controls the power to windows when key is off.I feel with it in line it reduces the chance of fire due to short if you are in car with ignition on as opposed to wiring it direct and it shorting out while parked unoccupied.better safe than sorry as wire is heavy gauge and will carry a heavy amperes load if you have ever seen a car with a short in wiring you know once they short they start to fuse to each other it rapidly spreads out of control.I can not thank Alan enough for his help.here is pic of solenoid installed
