The powerglide in my 51 chevy went out so I decided I would upgrade it to a 54 powerglide. I bought a rebuilt one from a guy with no torque converter or flexplate. I thought the one from my 51 would fit. It doesn't seem to. Is there a difference between a 51 and a 54?? Maybe it's me.
yeah, there's a difference! http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1949_53/index.htm read up on all the changes to the Powerglide in 1953. Sorry about that.
I have been looking on the internet but can't find any companies that actually sell new or rebuilt torque converters that fit a 54. Does the 54 torque converter look like the 51 or does it look like a newer style like a th350?
They were bolt together converters in all the iron powerglides. There is no need to get one "rebuilt", all you have to do is take it apart, clean it, and replace the O ring (and any other internal parts that might be damaged). I dont know if you can use a later converter in it...but you could look at the old parts books, and see which ones were the same? hmmm....looks like the 53-61 converters are all the same, according to the 1946-64 chevy parts book.
I do not have a tq for my 54. Can someone point me in the right direction to find one? Thanks squirrel and cabbie.
