Part 2 to 1956 Chevy axle removal Axles are out, getting the new bearings pressed in. I have a rebuilt differential going in and a new gasket. I see where the housing to differential nuts are supposed to have copper washers on them to stop leaks I presume, mine only had on a few but the gasket looked to be sealed on pretty good and never leaked. I see on some Ford nine inch installations (looked on YouTube as I could not find any 1955-1965 Chevy install and they are somewhat similar) where they used the copper washers but the differential gasket went on dry. Could I use Indian Head or something to seal my gasket and not use the copper washers? Do I need to do anything to the gears before install like add lube to them or??? Thanks for all the help so far
The copper washers prevent oil from seeping out around the threads of the stud, no reason not to use them.
If you got them ,use them. If not use regular flat washers, if you have them. I have put them together with NO washer.
I used to hate those copper washers on Fords because they were always crushed and had to be pried off with a screwdriver. I never put them back on and never noticed any leaks.
