Hey guys, I wanted to know if the rear windshield of my Chevy has a seal under the metal trim. Anyone know this? I wanted to take the trim off to do some bodywork although someone just mentioned to me today that if I take the trim off I need to replace the seal. Also, any tips on getting that hard to reach bolt on the front fender trim? The one that that is close to the firewall? My car is a 4 door sedan i don't know if there is a difference. Thanks -Cory
Back in the '50's and '60's, many cars, including your Chevy, used the weatherstrip/seal to hold the stainless trim in place. My Studebaker uses the same type system. The good news is that these seals are readily available at just about any vendor. Unlike newer cars, urethane isn't used so you should be able to do this yourself. One thing to watch out for is that these seals usually also hold the headliner in place.
I've got two 55's and have removed the gl*** from numerous tri fives. Small piece of advice. Don't try to pry off the stainless. The top corner 90 degree dog leg is screwed on through the corner of the roof. You have to take the upper inside garnish moulding off, and dig through the factory caulking to remove the 3/8" nut that is on the stud. Once this nut is off, the removal of the stainless can begin. BTW the front stainless must be installed in the new window seal before the gl*** is installed. I usually remove the fender before I take the stainless off. Good luck.
Go to www.chevytalk.com and check out the 55-57 modified or stock sections. You will get tons of advice specifically for your car. They even have a sticky for a post on exactly how to remove front and rear windows (which will greatly help you understand the situation). Yer it does, I if you what to replace the rubber, danchuck sell new rubbers and i would replace the clips that hold the rear stainless on, danchuck have these to. If you decide to take the screens out, I cut the windscreen rubber from the inside of the car & evenly push the gl*** out which the stainless still in the rubber, this way you don't blend the stainless.
