hello, my 55 buick still has the original 12 volt generator, my amp gauge doesn't work or never seems to move, is there a simple way to tell if the system is charging? can I just pull the possi cable when its running( old school way) or how is a easy way to check without a meter

Turn on the headlights and rev the engine. If they get brighter it's charging. Otherwise not.

Put a volt meter across the battery and take a reading, should be around 12 volts. Then start it and have someone rev it up and watch the volt meter. It should read around 14 volts at the battery revved up, just after starting it.

    Yeah, really!

You can buy a multimeter at Walmart for like $12, which will do wonderful things if you learn to use just the most basic functions.

I bought my first one at Radio Shack in 1968 & though I own newer ones, I still have it & it works.

You can also buy a cheap LED meter which just plugs into the cigarette lighter. You can watch the LEDs while driving & see what RPM it starts charging at (or discharging at LOL )
