This is what i did but its still binding. Figured I need to go off rear carb. But throttle shaft was cut.
Is it the linkage binding or could it be the throttle shafts are not parallel. Disconnect from the pedal linkage then disconnect one carb at a time to see if the bind goes away? Maybe one or more carbs is slightly turned at the base. There is some play at the carb studs. If all four open smooth while disconnected from the pedal then maybe look to the pedal linkage? Maybe you've already done this, just throwing it out there. Bottom line, find the bind! Watched your video and that engine sounds nice and strong! P.S. I'm with the direct linkage crowd as well. Good luck man!
Well I got my linkage figured out. The car stops and starts with no heat soak. Actually starting and stopping the best ive had it in the garage. Took it out for a ride and it ran awful! Won’t idle at stops sounded like it was flooding. I pulled back into the garage pulled air cleaners and fuel was dripping out of three carbs. I have the floats set to 2 3/8 and disk type needle and seats. Everything is new im just giving up on the 80+ year old carbs. I really want this 4 deuce setup to work. I talked to Charlie at vintage speed and pulled the trigger on stromburg 97s. Im in the process of routing my fuel lines and setting up my linkage.
97's are far better suited for multiple carb setups. usually dribbly carbs like you had are caused by dirt in the needle and seat... also if you select "full image" when posting pics, your pictures are nice and big like this:
I would always prefer Strombergs over the Holleys, especially as many as you have, for a big setup. The enrichment valves are mechanical on the Strombergs, the Holley carbs have a valve that is signaled to open when engine vacuum drops off to a certain point. Did you change the enrichment valves to ones with lighter springs that allow them to stay closed a bit longer? Multiple carbs let more air in and cause engine vacuum to drop much quicker allowing them to dump fuel before the time is right.
Yes that was one of the problems I had. The power valves were leaking and flooding the car out. So I bought plugs to block these so they wouldn't leak by and was running on straight jets. Primary carbs had power valves secondary had plugs. I found 3 of the 4 leaking by the plastic gasket on the valve. Charlie modifies his so the gasket will seal.
Well finally dialed it in for now. Stock 45 jets was way too much fuel. Dropped to 42 and seems to be running good. Wont be able to fine tune it until spring but its a good start I think.
So spring is here and the car still would not idle. I figured out the problem! It has to do with the aluminum pipe going into the side of the intake in the picture above. It goes to a pcv valve tapped into lifter gallery. Here was my problem cant adjust idle with mixture screws and the left 2 Carburetors pull more air in than rights with throttle plates closed. Anyone guess what was happening.
