It was a nice day in Mi. today pushed my project outside to see some sunshine. Just got my glass in and let the sun warm up the rubber seals. Hope to have running soon. Ron

 

This one belonged to Jay Lindsley and Jerry Olson back in the late 60's. It held the C Gas record at most of the So Cal strips running .01 sec off the National Record at 11.09 125 MPH. It was prepped and painted by no less than Bill Hines in Black Lacquer. Axle by Blair's Speed Shop. 338" Small block with Hilborns and a 4 speed.

If anyone knows it's where abouts, Jay is looking for it!

Sorry to "over-quote" this one but I love the low, level ride-height straight axle look! Looks like a pair of hairpin radius rods under there. Two types of wheels. Engine setback and rake. Love the Turbo Jet flags too. Makes me want to "Rat-ify" my '55.

 

I was checking out this thread because my first car was a 55 Nomad. I also had a 57 street freak style with 15x10 cragars out back but seeing these 55 gassers reminds me of the early 80s when I was living in East Whittier,CA.
I lived about 1/2 mile from Whittier Blvd (about 20 miles west was where East L.A. and the lowriders were. Whittier Blvd is a long highway,once part of route 101, and crosses a number of cities.) Anyways, there was a used car lot on Whittier Blvd that sold Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Lowriders etc......etc..... and I would often pass by and almost the entire front row of cars were jacked up (raised) 55 Chevys for sale with the average sale price of $1,500. I often wonder what happen to all of them.

Yeah, I finally get and build my trad-look '55 after wanting one for YEARS and suddenly they are on the verge of being done to death.

Yes, that is a classic look.

 

Love the look of this Chevy Altered! And the styling of the lettering is perfect. Maybe I need to get mine to the sign painter.

Nice picture find! This is the 55 chevy of racers Emmit and Hugh Glass Austin Texas out of the Oakhill area. Very fast car!

"Speed Specialists" used to be an old speed shop here in town.

Kiwi Kev , or anyone that knows I had a question about the STRICTNINE car, I realize the sraight axle raises the front end up high, but how did the rear get raised? Or the whole height of the car for that matter , the whole car looks like it's sitting up higher. Longer leaf spring shackes? Body Lift? Thanks, Bill

 

lifting the rears up on tri 5s is a combination of tire size and and radius made to fit. Also lift bars "traction bars" clamped on the front side of the leafs causes the rear to also lift. In some cases depending on tire size you sometimes end up lowering the car with blocks and inch or so to level the car again. Dont ask me how I know..

 

Here's what STRICNINE looks like today. In the 80's it was turned into a Pro Mod looking thing. We just returned it back to it's original version complete with a drilled 48 Ford front axle. It was a C/GAS car running right on the money. Hopefully we'll get it back when we test. WE added 200 lbs. when we converted it back to ladder bar/ front axle configuration. We'll see what happens at Sacramento this weekend!!!

 

Looks great. What does it weigh in at? Interesting that it ran C/Gas with the altered wheelbase. (always loved that look).
