I am building a 1955 Desoto Fireflite that came without the original rear end. I'm hoping to use a ford 9 inch, but I need the outside dimension of the stock rear end so that I can put the proper wheels underneath it without fitment issues. I've already looked at carnut.com and their information about rear end widths, but there's nothing regarding Desoto. Any information regarding the proper overall width of the rear end will be appreciated. Thanks in advance
I have a '55 Chrysler and, as you know, they share the same body/ch***is. I am swapping out it's rear axle ***embly for a 9" Ford from a '67 Galaxy. The Chrysler and Ford axles are both right at 61 1/4" inches, give or take a 1/4". The big Ford axles also have larger rear brakes, 11" as I recall, and are more comparable to the original Mopar size. Also have parking brake included, unlike the Mopar. '67/'68 are surely the same, and my guess is, they are the same through 1972 models. Also, they are 5 x 4 1/2" bolt circle, same as the Mopar. Ray
You really should have the wheels you want to run first. Then you can put some tires on them and shove them under the car. That way you get the measurement you really need. It will tick you off to find out you missed the mark by an inch or so.
'65-7 C Body are a direct bolt in for many Mopars. Also 71-3 Mustang & 70s Ranchero, Duster, E Body, ect fit with a spring perch relocation.
On my web site there is a list of some more popular axle widths if you have a wms number from yours. .
