Jeff suggested I post some photos of an installed 55 tank in my 54. You can see the filler tube exit the body at a slight different angle, also you can see it's larger and the straps have to be extended. The tank was installed without any modifications. Out of curiosity, would tank straps from a 55 have worked or are the 54 straps different on the ends that mount to the car?

The straps I used were for a 55 tank, it's the position of the attachment points. A person
could use a bolt coupler and some all thread and use the straps without welding on some
extensions. I just had some extra pieces and used them. The tank I used came from
Bob Drake and has provision for a in tank fuel pump, which they also sell.

I am doing this swap right now but I'm tapping in a return for efi....my question is do you open a bigger hole in the trunk floor for access to the sending unit? And where did you run your vent tube?

I would think you definetly want access to that sending unit. My '57 is different, but similar. I needed to enlarge/add my oem sending unit hole to also have access to my in-tank fuel pump. I chose to enlarge the opening. On the '57's the vent tube goes along the inside of the trunk and exits above the licence plate. I used 1/4" copper plumbing tubing for the run and connected it with rubber fuel lines and clamps.

Thanks Jeff that's a great read! And Texas 57 that sounds like what I'll have to do. The sending unit is at least 6 inches off. Out of curiously where did you put your return? There's no clearance on the top side of the tank to the trunk floor.

I don't get where you have to extend the straps, my new(55) tank is in, put longer bolts in and still the tank "floppy" in the hole" ???

Sending unit almost lines up with the original hole. it's still "back"(towards front of car) only lacks about 3 inches from lining up...???
