Hi guys! I’ve been working on a bone stock 55 Merc Montclair. Treadlevac style brakes with drums. The pedal was going to the floor, so did the usual cylinder rebuilds, bleeding, adjusting and found the front brakes have an adjuster cam on the lower right sides. The old manual says those are for major adjustments and the lower cam is minor. No problem! Adjusted accordingly and it worked great and then around the block it felt like it lost pedal again!! the cam on the driver side is worn and pretty much goes out of adjustment after a few times braking. I can’t find ANY info on this cam or backing plates anywhere other than this old manual and what’s on this car. I know, upgrade, swap out etc etc. but if someone can point me in the direction of a new cam or backing plates or refurbished parts I’d appreciate that route! I’ve spoken to so many car buddies and old timers locally and non, even my buds with 55-56 merce or fords have seen or heard of this brake system with the major/minor adjustment cams. thanks in advance
Best advice, get a factory shop manual for your car, eBay is where I got mine. Some old Motors Manuals may have a section on them.
I have the factory manual. I’ll check out tbird parts. Mainly just looking for a place to get replacement cams or parts for that style brakes.
