Hello, Nice old film from the history files. From Green Monster Number Two to Green Monster Number 11 and new records all over the USA on tour. The development from a fanatic like Art Arfons, was interesting to watch. It looked like, as the top speed improved with each iteration of the Green Monster line, the quickness off of the line was not evident. 1959 Lion's Dragstrip The noise was like watching single engine airplanes take off from the Long Beach Airport on any day. The number two was fast, but the number 11 version was noted as being the most complete, fastest, and most compe***ive, although, it was relegated to exhibition runs during its lifetime. We were fortunate that the Art Arfons Green Monster group decided to make a Westcoast tour in the 1959 era. Our stopover was at Lion's Dragstrip, near our own Westside of Long Beach house. The huge race car was impressive. We were ready for the instant sound and blast off from the starting line, like the top dragsters that we saw weekly. Throughout the years, there have been speed records by each numbered Green Monster. But, the witness of a SBC powered C/Dragster of the Tapia Brothers did a number on the big #11 at Lion’s Dragstrip. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/early-drag-racing-photos.1222399/page-21#post-14091080 Photo provided by Dr. Richard Tapia Jnaki Recently, I found a sound recording of the Allison motor firing up and making a run. Here is the resulting edited film in living color. 1959 Art Arfons Allison race car "Sound"
In the1950s (I am guessing 1957), photographer Grey Villet was sent by Life Magazine to shoot photos at Cordova for a story about drag racing. The story was never published but I found some of the photos that Grey shot that day on John Edwin Mason's website. https://johnedwinmason.typepad.com/jem_racing_photography/2010/03/life-magazine-cordova-dragway.html late
Hello, I was impressed with this old photo when I saw it a while back. The Dave Marquez Roadster was well built. The bright orange roadster is/was owned by Dave Marquez . It was an outstanding build and won “America’s Most Beautiful Compe***ion Roadster” at 1956 Oakland National Roadster Show. Dave Marquez Photo by Pete Garramone Dave Marquez was with the Motor Monarchs Car Club out of Ventura, CA, at the first NHRA National Event in Great Bend, Kansas. The engine is a fuel burning flat head with an Ardun OHV conversion. This car was immaculate in every detail... Not only was the roadster cool, but it was put together by some famous So Cal residents. Bob Joehnek from Santa Barbara built the motor. Jnaki Besides, who names the bright color Fluorescent Orange and White? https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/friday-art-show-7-30-21.1236938/#post-14144715
