I have a 1948 Ford F1 with a 1955 Y block from a Skyliner. There is a knock coming from the back of the engine or front of the*******. I originally thought it was the driveplate - I upgraded to the 1957 driveplate and inspected the******* and the problem is still there. The knock/chatter occurs just before 2000rpms and goes away about 2200rpm. It happens in P,N,D and L. It does not do it when the engine is cold, any after the engine has warmed up for a few minutes. I have checked for exhaust hitting, removed the belt, everything seems as it should. The car drives and shifts without any problems. I cut a piece of hose to use as a stethoscope and the time a hear any sort of chatter is by the distributor and down at the oil pump. Thanks for any help.
It's probably in the******* adjustment. IIRC, that is a Borg-Warner manufactured******* and some of the Studebakers using it have a similar problem. Read the Ford Shop Manual and adjust the linkages and bands per factory spec. jack vines
I have adjusted the throttle control arm many times from 1 1/2 turn out to 3 1/2 turns, adjusted both front and rear bands and the problem is still present. I have the manual and still cannot find the problem. Do you know of any other changes or adjustments that I could try??
I have seen double wall mufflers get a hole in the inner skin and the outer skin will pulsate and "knock" at a particular rpm, sounds just like a rod or wrist pin knock....
I was told they came from the factory that way! Hahaha! Seriously take a video and you'll get a definite maybe for an answer within a couple minutes!
Thank you for all the responses. I will double check the muffler to make sure thats not it. But it sounds like I may need to rebuild the motor. I tried Lucas oil additive and it did not make any difference at all. Maybe its time for a 302 and c4 anyway.
