    Hi

needs some help from you gurus, had to leave my Buick at friends house tonight, it wouldent start again,

The problem is the starter, it just clicks in the relay, it wount hit in, it did hit in a few times, but then it wouldent crank the motor around. It is the first time i had trouble with this, and i didnt understand so much of how this works with all the relays, vac***e and things.

Is there any easy way to trick the starter, so a could get it home, or should i call tripple A. It stands in a dirt driveway, so it would be nice to get it in to the garage before i have to dismantle to much.

I did a search in here, so i have som wireing diagrams and stuff i will take with me, but would really appreciate some tips and hints on this.

Its an original 322, with dynaflow and pedal start.

    Thanks

I forgot to mention, we tried another battery, and jumpcables from an other car, so i dont think its battery power that is the problem

Snic, I was gonna sugest a jump but since you have that covered, It sounds like the starter needs a rebuild or a replacment. If the brusher are worn out they behave that way. Also while I think about it the bearings(in the starter) may be worn out too. Lastly, Was the starter hot last night and after it cools down today it might work. You would need to address the heat issue. I wouldn't worry much about wiring diagrams at this point but do check the battery connections at the battery and the starter, both positive and negitive. I think you will find your problem in one of these things,Good Luck. Normal Norman

Try byp***ing the start relay that is for the pedal start. Trace the wire (probably purple) from the starter solenoid to the start relay. Take a jumper and jump the purple wire terminal of the start relay to a good +12V source. See what happens and then let us know. If it starts ok, then the start relay is going bad, if still bad, then probably the starter solenoid is going bad.

When I jumped that wire it was still just a click, I looked under the car, when a friend was trying to start, and it looks like the ''push thing'' on the starter got stuck half way in. I will take out the starter this week, and se if its rebuildable. Called the lokal tripple A and had them drive me home. So much for first cruising this year..

Thank alot for help, might post again if i need more advice.

Try something first: turn on headlights, then try the jumper again. Observe the headlights and see if they dim a lot, a little, or don't dim at all.

Dim a lot = Starter might be shorted or drive is jammed to the ring gear, would have said bad battery, but you tried that already.
Dim a little Starter solenoid (the push thing you mentioned) is bad or hanging up. Starter drive may also be hanging up.
No dimming = Battery cables (or connections) are corroded and won't push enough current to the starter and solenoid.

At least it is not the start relay! (Impossible to find)

Last piece of advice: Pull starter and take it to Autozone or Napa and have them test it. This will point you in the right direction.

    Hi

I tightend a nut on a copper bolt on the back of the solenoid last night, and then it fired, didn't fire everytime, but i figure out if I dismantle it, and clean it up, it might work.

Not sure what the bolt/nut is for, but i ***ume it's for ground connection

Im adding a happy pic from before it stopped:)

  8. Worth checking the copper disc in the solenoid for pitting. Until I finally changed it I got to be an expert at taking the starter off and first I flipped it over, then the next time I filed one side more or less smooth again, and on and on until I decided I didn't want to get forearms like Popeye from taking it apart in the driveway so often.

    Nice pic:D

Recommendation: Order a new solenoid from Rock auto. Pull the starter, clean it up and replace the solenoid. (Check the drive gear for wear too!) Bench test it. Re-install. Start the car and DRIVE!

today i pulled the starter, grinded down all contact nuts and stuff both sides, mounted together, greased up everything and it seems like it works with no problems.

The contact between nut and ''thing that goes to the starter'' was like a tiny welding point, maybe .5mm, so no wonders i had a probleme.

Thanks to you guys for helping me out, it really means alot to an cold norwegian, it is really nice there is still people out ho helps another out.

Im adding a pic so it woun't be all text:)

Glad to hear it was a easy fix, the starter on my 56' is doing the same thing.

thats a good looking car :D

  13. If it's anything like my experience, it will do it again, and again, and again, until you replace the solenoid.
