I searched around but didn't find a clear answer. I have a 1956 car and found some 1956 plates for sale. The only thing though is that the 1956 plates have a sticker on them for another year. Should I not buy the plates or can I just take the stickers off?
there is a phone number that you can call to see if the plate# is usable. i believe it takes a certain number of years before they are clear. I dont remember where I had the number written. Maybe someone has that phone number? then you can call to check before you buy them..
call the dmv first and make sure the numbers are clear. you can take off the sticker and just register it that way. also you need to make sure it's not a commercial plate (for trucks). www.davesclp.com either swapmeets or ebay are the best places to find them. i have 4 cars with them right now.
go to California DMV site and go to personalized plates..as if you were ordering one...There you will be able to key in the plate numbers and see if they are available. If your car is a 56 then all you need to do is remove the stickers. Make sure the plates are clean condition wise. You can then register them to the car as YOM plates. You must have the pair and they must be reasonably clean. When you remove the registration stickers try to do it carefully because if there is someone else that owns say a 1960 car then they may be able to use your sticker if its intact..guys peel them off all the time and use a 3m adhesive to reuse the reg sticker..dont just tear them off if you can help it. I hope this helps.
Thanks for the advice. I ran them a couple times beforehand through the DMV and they came up clear. They have the 1962 sticker and I'm wondering if I can keep the sticker on anyway or if the DMV will me to take them off because my car is a 1956 year. If I buy the plates, should the sticker be on or off when I take them down to the DMV? I think if the sticker is supposed to be off then it would be better cause I could cut down and cram the modern month and date sticker in there instead of using tabs. Also, is there an annual fee for YOM plates?
If you haven't, I would call DMV in Sacramento to make sure they're clear- I wouldn't rely on it if you checked through their web site. I imagine they'd tell you to take the stickers off, depending on who you get, but you shouldn't have any on. There may be a stack of year stickers, and they can be sold if you get them off nicely. I think YOMs are a one-time fee of $35. And, I've got commercial plates on my car. Thanks, Kurt
Oh cool. I called up the DMV and they said they were clear. In case I do take off the sticker stack nicely, do you have any idea what to charge or how to individually seperate them?
Just because the show up available or unavailable on the DMV site doesn't necessarily mean it's so... Call DMV before you buy... There's a $35 application fee, as well as an additional annual charge to retain them. If you try to peel the stickers yourself, soak the plates in near boiling water, and be patient. You should be able to peel them off the plate with your fingernail, and any residual residue can be removed with "goo-gone"...If you want to have someone peel the sticker for you...I have someone that's done it for me, with unbelievable results, and no damage to the pristine plates. If the plates have been registered under the "YEAR OF MANUFACTURE" program you can ONLY use them for what they had been used for in the past... For example a car registered in 2007 with 1956 plates and a 1959 sticker... This plate is now a 1959 plate. You can not change the sticker. It is now in the system as a '59 and can not be used as a '56 again. If the plates are old and havent been used under the YOM program, then you can use whatever year sticker within that plates period and be fine. In regards to the plate being clear, only the DMV office can tell. Hyfire
You will need to remove the reg stickers before taking them in to register to your car. The DMV or AAA will give you a small metal flag that you attach to the license plate. You will "stick" your current "2009" sticker on that flag.. you do not need any sticker for your plate itself. Its been awhile since I really looked but those reg stickers were always like 5-40 bucks depending on how nice and who has them. Good luck!
i would assume the yom plates are like any other special (paid for) plate. if you relinquish the numbers by not paying or canceling then the plate is up for grabs again?.
