And then to my horror realize that even tho i drained the block , it must have had some water still in. Once i got the motor pulled i noticed a freeze plug was popped. I don't have photos, i think i was to shaken. I'm hoping for the first time in recorded history freeze plugs do their job and i don't have a cracked block. Update will follow.

They are not really freeze plugs......core plugs for when the block is cast

Great news! The block is NOT cracked, pulled out the old cam today and put in the new one. I currently only have Wednesday available to work on the car at the moment, so it will be a week for update. I did however order my clutch and bell housing, and they both should be here hopefully before next Wednesday. More to follow.

Did you pull the whole motor apart? I plan on pulling mine this weekend. I hope I'm as lucky as you. If not I sure am going to learn an expensive lesson.

No we were gonna pressure test it, but I talked to an old timer with a little more knowledge and experiences, he says the cracks should be visible, they crack on the outside, not the inside.

You may have already done this previously, but if not this is a good video explanation on setting up a Lakewood bellhousing to ensure it's centered properly. They are often out a little and can give big headaches if not dialed in.

Thank you for the post, I will check it out, I didn't realize them being centered was that critical. Better to learn that now then when it's in the car lol

  19. VERY GOOD ADVICE!

If you have any questions about how to do or correct this, shoot me a PM. I have done so much of this I can do it in my sleep.

Make sure you get it right so you don't screw up that crash box's input shaft!

    See ya at Byron!

Dialed in my bellhousing today, we are within spec. Next week hope to attach the trans to the motor and drop it in the car.

  21. Another good idea (but seldom recommended) is to do a crankshaft endplay check before and after. Before the trans is installed to see what the crank endplay actually is, and then after its installed to confirm it is not preloading anything. The effects could wipe out the thrust main if severe enough.

  27. Can't wait to see how she runs with a gearbox when you got her all sorted out. Your gonna have a permanent smile tattooed on your face. Nothing like "rowing a shifter & sawing the wheel" at the same time.

Started work on the framework for the front clip, should be a little lighter this time around. (The previous one was all steel)[IMG]
