I was under the dash installing a new electric wiper motor and noticed that I had several places for light bulbs on the dash that were not hooked up. So I now have the heater controls and wiper switch lit up. Should the lighter lite up? Does anyone have a picture of their 56 dash all lit up? Wondering what all on the left hand side of the dash should be lit up. 20210921_121223.jpg

There is a single light bulb on the print i believe it’s between the wiper and cigar lighter. My lighter doesn’t show up but the photo shows the slot and the light on just not when the lighter in installed. There is a semi-clear ring on the lighter to light up the word. Pull your lighter out and see it the slot is lit up. My lighter is out in both photos. 404909A2-B106-43F8-987E-6489AC0D9490.jpeg 59F27133-6AEE-41DD-8304-D8A3626C8A49.jpeg

Thanks for the pictures. Mine has a single slot and I can see light coming through the slot. My lighter also has the clear ring in place.

Also, does anyone have a parts explosion of how the lighter goes together? I can plug my car charger into the lighter well and it charges the phone. However, when I plug the lighter in it pops the fuse. I thikn I may have put it back together incorrectly when I swapped the knobs.
    Thanks

If it works as a charger, but blows the fuse when cigar lighter is pushed in sounds like the cigar lighter is causing a direct short to ground. When working correctly the coils of the lighter make contact when you push in and the high resistance level of the coils allows current to flow through and heat the coils. Once a certain heat level is reached there is a little heat activated catch that releases and allows the lighter to pop back out.

Check the lighter and see if it looks like it is somehow connecting to the center element and the lighter housing sides creating a short. It could even be a piece of metal wedged in the lighter causing the coils to contact the housing. Or the coils could be broken and making contact with the outer sleeve.

Thanks Zax. I was able to figure out that my original lighter was put back together incorrectly. However, by the time I figured that out I had already purchased a new $5 lighter from the parts store and swapped out the knobs. The issue now is that the shaft that the original knob attached to is not long enough for the new knob (with set screw) to grab onto. If I get the new knob to grab the shaft then the lighter doesn't work correctly. I also tried the new knob on the original lighter with the same results. Not an issue for me as I don't smoke other than I wasted $5 and half a day on this wild goose chase.
I also moved the slot in the lighter well so that it was pointed directly at the bulb which does provide more light in the opening now but the lighter text on the bezel is still not lighting up.
