I started building my '56 Merc last week and had a couple questions..... Not a real show stopper but..... .... I picked up a running 292 y-block and 3 speed O/D trans from a running 57 Ranchero......My Merc had a 3-speed ****** in it, I could tell from the column shifter that was still in it...... The engine mounts bolted right in place but the ****** mount does not come even close. Did the Mercury use a different ****** then the Fords??..... Are the clutch pedal ***emblys the same?.... Can I use the clutch pedal from the Ranchero??.....Thanks for any help...
The extra length is in the O/D unit. Moves the mount back a couple of inches. Missed you at H.A.M.B.drags. jerry
Hey Man Time-Bomb John here. I had 4 56 Mercs and all 56 Mercs came with 312`s.With no syncro`s in first gear I opted to put a 65 Mustang Toploader in and it ran sweet. If my memory serves right I thing there`s a bell crank that mounts on the drivers side of the bellhousing with a bronze split bushing that rides on the pivot.I have a set of bushings here I think.Any measurements you have by how much it is out might help me. I know a guy up here who has a 3-speed overdrive .
I missed you guys in MOKAN too.... Jerry, the mount is forward of the overdrive unit.......The 3-speed mount that is actually on the 3-speed itself and is too far forward from the ****** mount on the Merc... I have a late model 4-speed toploader......I guess if I have to build a mount...I might as well make the effort for a 4-speed instead..... I was hoping to make this as "bolt-in" as possible...oh well, nothing new here....when it come to modifying..
That car has a roof...you know that you dont like cars with roofs on them...by the way saw your pic in a mag here recently..through me for a loop are you using an alias name? or did they get it wrong?
They got it wrong....what's new?? This car may well get a Carson style roof....somebody's kids did a tap dance on it... What have you been up to?....Stop by the shop some time...we have beer and steel/.......Neal
If your looking for an OD and don't think you'll be racing around a whole lot, a 4 speed out of an early 80's Mustang has a 4th gear OD. My buddt put one behind his 312 and all it needed was a 3/4"-1" spacer between the ****** and bellhousing. Just a thought.......slim
Yeah i need to get up there...its about time for a little break from the small town...A carson top would look cool especially with a little chop job...where is the new shop?? i heard it was off of 4th by six pac is that right??
Hey Neil, No helpfor your question. Just wanted to say hi. We are OVERDUE fro some tacos and beer. Lemme know when you are in town again! FONZI
Is the merc a hard top? Got pictures. I have a 56 too...the pictures make it look worst than it really is. Its mostly surface rust...very light. Otherwise a super solid ride. It has the original 312 w/ low miles on it and I think a Merc-o-matic. Sitting in TX, waiting to be mailed home.
Yea, mine is a 2dr hardtop also.....it is a Medalist....but has some weird options......I'll post pics later....
Hey cool car you have! I got a chopped 56 montclair, love the bodystyle! get you're car on the road before the become too popular. here is a pic.any questions just ask, love to help. you don't to many of them. Eric. Got pictures.
I had a 56 2dr sedan, it had "Medalist" script but was really a custom. The Med was the lowest priced Merc in 1956, so to make a few extra sales many dealers changed the script. Don't think they could keep up with the demand...............OLDBEET
Anyone know how much different my '55 Merc wagon is as far as drive train goes? It has a Y-Block in it but it is covered with too much crud to see any markings. It also came with an automatic i it....been thinking about a stick. Is it difficult to changeover? Glenn
I got a 56 montclair that I put a BB 429 with a C6 trans. I just cut that big *** trans crossmember out and welded in a new trans crossmember from P.A.W. It moved about four inches from what I remember.... Lucky
