my friend just bought a 55 plymouth savoy with a 56 hyfire v8 in it. we have no idea to tell what this motor is, cubic inch, h.p. etc. it has a 2bbl. carb on it. where would i find identifying numbers. also someone told me that that motor can be converted to a hemi by putting hemi heads and intake on it, is this true?...any help would be appriciated...thanks,mike
Check out this page - http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Track/4164/55.htm - for more info. I don't really think you can convert the Plymouth polys to hemi, all I've ever heard is that it's the Chrysler Windsor poly that can be converted (it's the exact same displacement each year as the upper-model hemi's have, just a different cam, intake, and heads). You might be able to convert it into a Red Ram hemi, although that page says that in '56 they were designed and built specifically by Plymouth.
Believe it, the dodge heads will bolt to plymouth polys and the chrysler heads will bolt to the chrysler polys the 305 plymouth was a favorite bonneville motor fit just right for the 5.0 fim class
I think it is a 260. There is a website devoted to the poly head. I can't remember the exact site but if you would type in something like Poly head into a search engine you can find it. Also there may be alink from forwardlook.net.
Poly to Hemi. Heads, pistons, pushrods. Dodge if I remember correctly. Intake and exhaust will swap. Only works with early polys, not later wideblocks. The trick is finding the Dodge heads.
