1952-59 Ford 1956 tie rod end size

When doing the Granada disc brake conversion on a 56, I find that I need to ream the Granada spindle arm to accept the stock 56 tie rod end. I need to buy a 7.15 degree, 1 1/2 inches per foot reamer but don't know the exact size the tapered hole should be. Does anyone know if it is the 1 inch large end and 7/16 small end size reamer?? Thanks

 

The Granada spindle is the "small" pin size on the bottom of the upright and your '56 ball joint is the "large" (7/8 at the big end). So that size of 1-1/2 per foot reamer will do the trick for the main axis. I don't believe the tie rods will be a problem.

Seems to me that the '71-'73 Mustang uprights are the ones where you have to also rework the tie rod tapers. They are just like the Granada - except for the tie rod holes.

 

I already have the Granada spindles with the correct bottom ball joint hole reamed and the Granada spindles are installed. It is the hole in the Granada spindles for the tie rod end that is too small for the stock 56 tie rod ends. It is strange that all the buzz on the Granada disc swap to the 56 never mentions any need to rework the tie rod tapers. Am I the only one that has run into this problem?

I believe the reamers are very expensive, maybe 2 new tie rod ends that fit the Granada spindles would be cheaper?

 

I did try the Granada tie rod ends and they were too long. I guess I am stuck with buying a reamer if I can figure out which one.

 

Hi, Do the tie rods fit the hole and there is not enough room for the nut? Maybe you need to fly cut the top side of the spindle.

I bought my reamer from Speedway, and sold it as soon as I was done with it, they're not hard to get rid of. Gary

 

When I did my 54 the tie rods did not fit. I used the same reamer that I used for the ball joint hole in the spindle. They both have the same angle. reamed by hand to make the holes bigger. They are only a little bit off.

A friend of mine that has a 56 and did the granada swap said he did not have to ream the tie rod holes.
