The engine was rebuilt so what oil do I use in my 1957 Chevy truck after I complete the break in procedure.

you can use whatever you want...it's not real picky, anything is better than what they had in 1957.

seems many guys are using diesel oil, 15W40, or similar.

Valvoline VR1 has the good minerals for flat tappet cams. Zinc I think

VR1 is good, then new Rotella diesel oil is formulated for the newer diesels . 10-30 or 10-40 conventional Valvoline is good.

  6. Another vote for Valvoline Vr1 (non synthetic version), has plenty of zddp

I run Walmart oil too. I used it in my fancy race engine, as well. But now I just have normal engines.

As far as motor oil goes, you'll get just about as many opinions as there are brands, weights, etc.

Ted Eaton (eatonbalancing.com) said that Valvoline Daily Protection 10w-40 Conventional Motor Oil has enough zinc and phosphorus for Ford Y-block flat-tappet engines that have been properly broken in; there is no need for VR-1, which does have a higher zinc & phosphorus content. That being the case, I'm sure it would offer just as much protection in any flat-tappet engine, including the 235 Chevy.

I would use the Valvoline VR1 for break in since it's high zinc, I use it in all my old flat tappet engines.

  11. Had a 302 I built with my dad and uncle in 1988.
Sold it 2 years ago. Ran every brand of oil out there. Even cheap Saxon from the gas station. Recycled oil, whatever said oil on the jug

still going. I see it around town regularly.

the key for oil is making sure it has some and ya change it every now and then.

Depends on if the clearances are correct, If it's correct, put whatever you want. If not run straight 70 brad penn. lol.

Lucas Hot Rod 10w-30. It has everything you need for any 50-60’s solid or hydraulic flat tappet cam and lifters. If you plumbed a full flow filter all the better. If not the stock byp*** filter is just fine. I’d change oil once a year or every 1500 miles. Good luck and have fun with your pickup.
