Technical 1957 GMC 270 straight six help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dads48Stylemaster, Feb 25, 2023.

  1. Have a 1957 GMC 270 straight six with a saginaw 4 speed*******. Looking to replace the******* with an automatic. The rear end is a 1999 Ford explorer with a 3:55 gear ratio. Having trouble finding a bellhousing and automatic******* that will hook up to the engine. Any help would be great.

  2. They did come with hydromatics.
    Good transmission
Might be a little hard to find these days

  3. They pop up for sale every now and then

One of these would make for an interesting swap into it and easy to find an automatic for

  5. Thanks for the info. Sorry for the late reply. The guy who worked on my Dad's car did a real hack job. The clutch pedal and reservoir is original, but they cut all the lines, rigged up some springs on the original "L" shaped lever and all the linkages to the******* have been welded together in all kinds of configurations. My Father use to complain about shifting it and now I know why. The engine has been completely gone through but the******* has not. So, staying with my Father's love for the 270, I want to keep it -******* has got to go.

Using a 48-55 first series pick-up 6 cylinder bellhousing or a 55-62 6 cylinder car bellhousing will allow you to bolt in a 4 Speed car trans (Saginaw, Muncie,T-10) with only a rear mount modification or replacement. The 55-57 car 6 cyl bellhousing has side mounts also. The 40-50’s fork and stock linkage work just fine. I’ve done in a 50 coupe and just finished a 40 coupe.
Only problem was making a floor shift with shorter rods and moving the mount farther forward. Both were behind GMC’s.
