I have a slight leak in my fuel/vacum pump. Thinking the problem may simply be a gasket, I disassembeled the the unit and set off to the local auto store to pick up a repalcement gasket. To my surprise, what they said I needed was a small gasket that actually fit inside the housing/bowl. I have attached a picture to illustrate what I am referring to. Does this sound right? I thought there was only a rubber gasket that ran along the rim (which the screws penetrated where the two pieces screwed together).
That cork gasket is only used with a sediment bowl.Ain't gona do you a bit of good where you show it. The rubber "gasket" you refer to is the fuel pump DIAPHRAGM which is what moves the fuel through the pump. These have not been available at parts stores for years ,in fact it is a bit hard to find fuel pump repair kits at all nowadays. If your diaphragm has a hole in it it is junk, leaking around the edges ,tighten up the screws.
This guy might have a kit for your car if you want to rebuild it yourself but a rebuilt pump for a 58 Chevy shouldn't be very hard to find.
I bought a rebuild kit from these folks for my Rocket. Kit was well made, included all gaskets, valves, and diaphrams. My pump works great. http://www.azvintageparts.com/
