Is there an alternative to the Teletouch Automatic Shift on the 1958 Edsel? For Example, I ***ume I could swap in an automatic 'lever' type column from a 58 Ford... or possibly a 59 Ford or Edsel. What I really want is more of a modern 'touring' type custom/update, so my thought is an IDIDIT type tilt column with a lever shift, a mod 351w with a C6 or AOD. I can find most/all of the other kits..disk brakes, Air Bag suspension, AC, radiator and so on, as the 57-62 Ford ch***is is pretty much the same on Ford /Edsel ... but that darn shift linkage throws me off. Thanks In Advance..
Junior series (Pacer/Ranger) Edsels were offered with a column shift automatic as an option in the first several months of production; it might be physically easiest to swap one from a parts car if you can get all the linkage. If you have a Citation or Corsair, they were only offered with the Teletouch.
Back when I was a kid we had a 58 Bermuda 9 p*** wagon. The solenoid kept messing up, Dad put a floor shift in it finally. It was a 361-303 horse E-400. Red with the gray woodgrain on the sides, great car. Lippy
If you're looking for a bolt-on kit, I doubt you'll find one. There's just too many possible combinations and those aren't popular enough for someone to tool up a purpose-built kit.
Your dad wasn't the only one. There were a lot of them around because that was an easier install than a column shift....
