Thought I would share with you guys what my Saturday looked like today. To make a long story short... I purchased this f100 a few weeks back for an incredible price, I did a basic tune up which included trying to rebuild the carb on the stait 6. After a few hours it just didn't rebuild right and still ran pourly, so i decided to look on craigslist for a carb. I ended up finding a complete rebuilt motor and BRAND NEW CARB for $300!!! I drove 2 hours to grab it and I finally got time today to start the motor swap, but as all of you know a one day job ALWAYS turns into 2+ days. I pulled the clutch apart and there was no way I could re-use the old one and after calling around it looks like I will have to wait until Tuesday to finish it. Figured at least now I will be able to clean up the motor bay a little more. The best part of the build however was that my dad and little brother drove down from Pasadena California to San Diego (2+ hours) just to help me out. More pictures to follow
After the motor is in, I'm going to start on the suspension. I hopefully will be getting some white walls and some cl***ic steelies plus a drop on it.
Rats! seeing you guys working in your short sleeves, is really annoying. Try doing that in a rain coat.
Hell, just getting to spend time with your father and brother makes for a awesome weekend. And, your getting free labor to boot!
Yeah, I couldn't p*** up the price on the motor and there is a lot more I want to do before putting a small block in it. The suspension is really bad and is the next item on the list. Plus I'm starting to like the sound of the strait 6, don't get me wrong a small block is going to happen just not right now.
That really made the day that they came down, I actually didn't even know they were coming I was working on the truck and all of the sudden they pull up in front of the house with their tools. And yeah free labor is always ALWAYS a plus.
Keep the thread going with updates. I was at a car show in West TN two weeks ago and saw this one and fell in love with it. Got my interest peaked in a body style I had previously ignored.
Yeah I agree, I came across one at a show about 6 months ago and really came to love the body style. Found one cheap online and picked it up, I love that stance too Thanks for the picture.
Question about lowering the front of this truck, I have been looking all over this forum and have not had much luck. I want to know which and how many leaf springs I can pull out of the front of the truck to get it lower. I was told I could take out the 2nd and 5th one to drop it a little. Does anyone have any experience with this or know of a place I could find out some information?
Do a search on lowering a F-100, There are a ton of threads on here for dropping these! There is even a thread for flipping the front axle over the springs. I have a 58 that I'm thinking of doing a flip on right now, Its kind of a project "cheap thrills" and I don't want to drop the coin on a new dropped axle right now! I have lowered a 64 F-100 by taking the leafs and turning a couple of the longer ones upside down in the leaf pack, it lowered it about 3" or so, but it rode like **** because it was on the bump stops! maybe if I had taken them out and done a C notch it would have been better. Anyways, so a search you will find all the info you need to get it down in the weeds! Chris
If you just pull leaves out of the spring, you'll make the spring softer, and the truck will bottom out a lot. You're better off going to a spring shop, to have the spring de-arched. This will lower the ride height but retain the stiffness. Great score on that motor ... when you get tired of the six, think about a Y-block swap. Much cooler than any small block, they sound incredible, and it'll drop right onto the motor mounts you already have.
This is how mine was lowered. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?do=discuss&group=&discussionid=16547
Great thank you for that info, I will look into a spring shop today. The y-block is on the list for sure and will come as soon as I get a few more things done to the truck. I found that motor for such a great deal I couldn't p*** it up!
Truck looks great! If you keep the 6 cyl until it dies, you may never replace it. I did the same thing 10-12 years ago and can't seem to kill the motor. Still runs too well every day to get rid of it. Conor
