There's an episode of Homicide Life on the Street where Brody, the photographer, drives one of these.

My personal preference is the '57 but the real tragidy is that more of these didn't survive to be returned to the street as cool cruisers. Ford outsold Chevy in '57 but you'd never know it by the number of each you encounter.

The same can be said for for the year 1932 ... Chevrolet outsold Ford then also
But you would NEVER know it by the number of each you encounter :D

I like this one ... in Georgia
but it is a 6 cylinder

The reason Ford outsold Chevrolet in 57 was not just an accident of history. Ford under Henry Ford II went all out, go for broke so to speak. Never before or since have so many models of the same platform been offered to the buying public. You had Customs, 300s, 500s, Fairlanes, Rancheros, wagons, hardtops 2 and 4 door in several different trims, convertibles, and retractibles. All this just in time for a recession.
In 58 many models were dropped. Ford also turned its back on performance and really did not get back into the game until 1962. Hence the police interceptor, an engine for police and respectable citizens, not the greasy rock and rollers. This may be why the 57 was afterward dethroned by the aging Chevy body style as the car of 57. In the immediate years afterward there was simply no Corporate support of performance. The supply of factory after market parts and media that goes with it was not there. By the time Ford returned to the performance game in 62, the Y block was now a base engine in its last year offered in a car. Most 57s and 58s were y block powered except for the few offered with the Interceptor.
Who knows, if Macnamara had not bought into the whole anti Elvis, hot rod and degenerating youth hysteria the 57 Ford may be known today as "the car" of the 50s.

....Not to mention the inherit fact that the front crossmember rotted out so fast,... you could here it from day one.
The rust factor on 57-60 Fords was a major problem.....And I say this LOVING 55-60 Fords.

My grandfather owned a ford dealership from 1949-1970. He said the absolute worst time was '57-60 because Ford decided to use recycled metal. He said the same thing......they were rotting on the show room floor.

i heared from some old timers that in the mid to late 50,s the big 3 started to use recycled steel that they though melting would kill any rust in the metal didn,t work and that,s why people said they started rusting on showroom floors also the designs left a lot to be desired with dirt and water would get in spots like over the headlights in 58 fords and plym,s they made patchs in 59 for a lot of the big 3 cars

Maybe, but in this part of the country, I have rarely seen a '57-'60 ford that didn't wave like lake michigan.

Crazy ive never heard that before !

  26. In the north east, these were notorious rust buckets. I had looked at a few in the '70s and all were beyond salvage, or at least beyond my skills and budget at the time. Which is a shame since they were good looking cars.

I think I remember seeing this car in a driveway somewhere around 7th Ave. and Indian School back in the mid 90s.

    Thats the one!

Her name is Patty as in "Pass around Patty" . Everyone in certain circles in Phoenix has had a hand at her or on her.
