So I've been working on my 59 Chevy impala sport sedan for a while now. Got her all ready to roll then as I was getting ready to take her off the poor mans lift (rusty Ol' jack stands) I noticed the rear end was leaking pretty bad. Got me a new gasket, busted loose the rear, was getting ready to slide it off and immediately forgot what to do from there? I've done the whole google thing as well as blowing the dust off of the old mechanic books. I just can not find what I exactly need to do? I wanna be able to replace the old gasket as easy as possible and get out for her maiden voyage!!! Your guys help will be great!
Remove the axles by removing the retainer plates. Remove the bolts around the housing and pull it out.
In order to remover the axles once the plates are removed, you will need a puller hammer or what I've done is use a old rim (without the tire) and hit the rim with a ball peen hammer. Also, it will be a good time to install new axle bearings, which are pressed in. And don't forget the gaskets for the plates.
The old Bearings may be fine at 200 .oo dollars for new Bearings fron who knows where I would look at the old stuff OEM American made
If the axle isn't real stuck you may turn the brake drum around and put lug nets on a few threads and use the drum for a slide hammer.
