I've got a '59 El Camino that I intend to finish one of these days, and have yet to decide just what colors and graphics (if any) I want to go with. I've done some concept renderings and would like to get some opinions. Here is the car in black with candy red scallops, pinned with a fat white or silver stripe. Car rides on 14"x6" chromes wrapped in 7.50x14 firestone ww's. Let me know what you think of the scallop layout, and what should be tweeked etc.

If I happend to see that roll by on the street AS IS, I would be beyond impressed. Extremely tasteful! Besides, you know what they say about "trust your gut" and "go with your instincts"...

that looks TIGHT!! however.. to make it even more mint.. i would do that glossy black.. with very light silver flake in it.. make those scallops candy apple red metal flake, red flake that roof and it would be off the hook.. just my opinion though!

I'm usually not very fond of scallops, but these I do like. Subtle & look like they actually belongs on the car, nice work!

  6. The layout looks good as is. You could run gold or silver metallic crab claw flames in between the scallops. There are so many combos that would look good, too.

Thanks for the kind words and suggestions guys. I like the idea of trying the scallops and roof in red metalflake. I'll have to render a version like that and re-post it here. I've also considered a light blue for the scallops or maybe a copper color. The goal is to achieve an authentic mild custom that was built in say, 1963. I have some '63 Impala SS buckets and console for it. When did metalflake come out? is it legit for a projected build date of '63?

Man I can't really answer for certain exactly when flake started to be used, but I'm sure it was by then. For what it's worth I think that you've got such a clean and tastefull design there that I wouldn't even fuck with it though.

    Sometimes less is more.

I'm a commercial graphic artist and it's easy for me to overthink what I'm workin' on in the name of improving the design...only to step back later and see that I had it nailed to begin with.

In other words, go ahead and play around with it some more but just for fun...you already nailed it.

  11. Man...I really like the look. Subtle, clean, classic, and not overdone. I'd take one. I do like the copper idea, but it seems too popular right now.

Yes, copper is indeed popular at the moment, and I don't want to copy any current fads... want to avoid the "I've been shopping at House of Kolors" look... not that there's anything wrong with that!

I've got a folder on my website where I have posted lots of other color scenarios... check it out at www.nostalgic.net/arc/3d

  13. I looked at all the colors and the black and blue really jumped out along with the black and red. The lt green had a nice early sixties look. You should try the black and blue with the wires and see how that looks.

Not sure either when flake arrived, but I know it existed at least -62 so I would guess late 50's? Checked your folder & I like most of them, you've got great taste! The light blue with wires is nice & with white Impala buckets I'm sure it'll come out really sweet. Btw did'nt you post a pearl white version a couple of months ago?

Epinut, I posted a black one with red fins and roof in the Friday Art Show several months ago, but have not done any pearl white versions yet, although thats something that has been on my mind also.

I just did some digging through some old custom car rags, and found a Februar y Issue of "Rodding and Re-styling", with an article titled "Revolution in Paint: How to finish your car with metalflake". Article claims the paint has "passed preliminary testing with flying colors, and is about to hit the market". So I guess that answeres the question... 1961

Here's the one I've thought about. And I've searched for a date of the "flake debut" too, found Hagström guitars they had this finish -58. Not sure if it's actually metal flake, but it sparkles anyway...

Ah yes, the cream version... forgot about that one.

Interesitng, that sure looks like flake on that guitar. If that guitar has a true 1958 finish on it, then it contradicts the article I mentioned. I just posted a new thread with links to the scanned pages from the Rodding and Re-styling article about Metalflake paint, but here they are again for quick reference.

Ha! After checkin' the pics in the album, why are you askin' US?!?! lol!

You will have a fantastic ride whatever you end up doin'. I still think the first one in this thread does it best for me.

What are you doing your manipulations in? They are verdy tasty. I can pick out much of what's your work and what's photo, but there are grey areas where I can't tell for sure. Damn nice work.

As many have said, you nailed it with the black / red scallop combo. By far the best of any of them IMO.
