I am interested in converting my front drum brakes to disk brakes on my 59 Skyliner. I've found several conversion kits out on the electrons, but they all require the use of 15" or larger wheels in order to accomodate the rotor/calipers. Last year I upgraded to an aftermarket firewall mounted Bendix power brake booster, so now I have power ***isted brakes on 4 drums, but still not enough to stop this 4500 pound car effectively. Well, I'd prefer to use my existing 14" wheels and retain my really expensive original deluxe hub caps. Can anyone in this forum offer me a solution to my quest? Gary
Hi Giz, I have three 59 fords. Two have big block power and one with a six banger. I have found the drum brakes to be more than enough for almost all the driving I do. I have never overheated them or experienced fading on any of the cars. My galaxie is a true sleeper with a stock looiking 352 under the hood. Even making 1.5 times its original horsepower, I have never run into brake problems. My suggestion would be to run the car for a while to see if the old drums are going to be an issue for you. If it is going to be an issue, brake conversion kits for the rear should be available from speedway motors and the front will be a cobble job using some late sixties early seventies stuff.
