  1. We used to drive out cars, most stuff had to get done either in an evening or a weekend.

  4. Porting the cylinder heads will aid high RPM power only at the expense of poor low RPM performance when the fuel drops out of the mixture because of low mixture velocity. Unless you plan to turn the engine at 6000 rpm or more, porting your heads will simply be a waste of time and if you nick a valve seat, you get to spend money or repairs or new heads. The rest of your 283 isn't going to be matched to a port job unless you simply do a little pocket porting and/or grind off casting flash. Nothing wrong with that but leave the big ports to the racers.
I'd go with a 300 hp cam, a nice little AFB carb on your stock 4 barrel intake and a chrome air cleaner. Like was already said, make sure your ignition system is up to par. I'd swap out the points for a pertronix unit and double check the vacuum advance.
The powerglide in a heavy 64 Impala with 3.08s is a big limiter. As was said, a 350 turbo would help wake it up...a 700R4 would need 3.70 or deeper gear to work properly.

Just my opinion, but I would go with a Quadrajet. I would think a cast iron intake would be cheap, and easy to find. Just curious, is a th350 a direct replacement for a Powerglide with a rear pump?

  6. Thanks for the advice. One big thing I'm wondering about is if I change to a 350, how would that work with my column shift? I've only got the 2 gears so how would the three gears of the 350 work. Talking about how would the column shift work from PRNDL to PRND2L

When we did that to my brother's '68 Chevelle, the shifter had enough movement for all 3 forward speeds. The L indicated second gear, and you went on down past that for low. The th350 was a direct replacement in that car. The short tailshaft version did not require driveshaft mods, and also worked with a Saginaw 3 speed.

Most Impala type suppliers carry 'em.
