any ideas on putting ps on a 60 ton,maybe a later box will fit (68-87) but this truck has a 235 6 with a 1 wire alt .I dont really want to back up with a gen and a stock style ps pump on the gen, any ideas--------also needs a steering column , is a later model tilt column strong enough without ps (column is from a mid to late 70s truck)
You can easily convert over to power steering, but the bolt pattern of your stock box and the later power boxes is different. Also, the diameter of the power box will interfere with the frame unless you have an adapter. I have used this adapter and it worked great: http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=332923 The guy who makes these adapters also makes other adapters as well, and his parts are inexpensive and of very high quality. Your current column is plenty strong enough. If you' want to run that column, there's a couple of things you'll need to do. The stock 60-66 Chevy/GMC trucks have a 1-piece steering shaft that goes from the steering wheel attach spline all the way down to the box. Your later column requires the use of an intermediate shaft, whether it's the stock energy absorbing unit, or a pieced together (U-joint, double-D shaft, etc) set-up. Do you have the original column? If so, there's a way you can run your stock column with a later box. PM me if you're interested. I have the adapter you'll need. If you haven't checked out this website, I highly recommend it.
