I'm having a hard time finding a replacement power steering control valve for a 1960 Sunliner. Mine is damaged and most likely not a candidate for rebuild. I have found some material online that seems to indicate 60-64 are interchangeable. I've found in stock a Lares re-manufactured #5 control valve which is listed specific for 1961, 1962, 1963 & 1964. For 1960 they indicate a #4 control valve which is no longer available without sending a core that can be rebuilt. Does anyone know if the 61-64 valve will fit 1960 also? It looks identical from the pictures available.
It appears that the center link is different on the '60 cars. It may be possible to swap to the later link, but you'll have to check.
The valve may be common to the '60-'64 Fords and also T-Birds. Post a picture, meanwhile check places like MACs just to get a price idea and a visual on it.
Thanks for the replies. I took a chance and ordered the 61-64 version and it arrived today. Unfortunately although the valve body and all the hole positions are identical, the tube casing with the ball stud is 180 degree different than the 1960. The way the bolt holes are positioned you can't reverse the tube/ball stud either. Looks like I will have to continue searching for a core that can be rebuilt. If anyone knows of anything out there I'm all ears. So far I can't find anything available.
I had a similar problem with my 60 Sunliner build, till I fell into a new in box borgeson box on my local craigslist. My thought was to look at 61 to 64 power valves, idler arm, center link tie rods etc. and swap the whole steering ***embly including column and box. My old interchange manual says that the spindles interchange 60-64. upper arms interchange 57-64. The lowers interchange 57-62. The thought being that the newer stuff might be easier to find than the odd duck 1960 stuff. I don't know that it would be a painless swap but its food for thought as I haven't pursued it any further. Good Luck on your search!
