Tomorrow Max will start trimming the panels & welding them in one at a time. It will all be tig welded then ground & worked as much as we can with in reason. We are on a tight hours schedule on this car so we wont be able to metal finish as much as we like but it will still be high quality, more to come.

  4. 1960 Ford Starliner, my all-time favorite car, all-time.

Love to get one, by the time my kids are out of college, I'll probably be too old to work on one...much less afford too!

Keep up the good work, I'll keep drooling, er watching the build.

Love the Starliner...but then I love all '60 Fords.
A gal in my school had a slightly rusty Starliner in that pale orchid color. I don't remember much about her, but the car...

One more small patch then should be able to put the outer hand formed lower rear quarter patch on.

Another small inner patch had to be made.

Several of the trim bolt holes are rotted so a die for forming the square holes to match was made & patches made. For us it is all about doing the details correct.

Very cool build. There is a Starliner a few miles from me in the woods with 9 or 10 other early cars, I have worked on the land owner for 4 years now to buy them but he wont let them go. Now the Starliner in about 8 in in the dirt and I am sure the entire lower half is no good anymore.

  9. My first car was a 60 Starliner, had the 360hp 352 motor and "three-on-the-tree" with overdrive. No PS, no air.

I have loved the looks of the '60 Ford, especially the Starliner long before they were considered desirable. If only I had bought them then.
Hell, I was brought home from the hospital in a '60 Fairlane 500.
Look forward to following this thread!

There is still quite a bit of welding & grinding to do on this back corner but it is starting to come together. Yes that is the very rust thru trunk floor you are seeing thru where the hand made repair panel will go.

Max got the rear corner welded up, ground, planished & into DA 80 grit..Plus some pin hole sand blasting where the side trim goes. Remember these are all hand formed panels, no after market bad fitting junk here.

More to come as the build progresses.

  17. Here's the work that's going on with the chassis.
    100_0511.jpg

Removing the rear suspension is a piece of cake. Racecar is waiting impatiently for that big piece of steel to get out of the way so race season can start.

    100_0513.jpg

Turns out that removing the front suspension is a real trick without the body on. Nothing to push against to compress the front springs. It was a little tense releasing the upper A-arms but no big deal. Dig that crazy camber!

Now off to the sand blasters to get everything cleaned up.

FYI the local vintage ford parts place here in San Dimas CA has a NOS grill for your starliner hanging on the wall in it's original packaging.....

  21. Good progress bro, my favorite Starliner is the one I am seeing at the time. These rare cars are so hip, best of luck getting that baby eating some white lines soon! ~sololobo~

Any progress with the spindle/brake swap? I have a set of those on my '59 T'Bird, haven't finished up yet, and wondering how you think it'll work out. The steering arms are so different in length and angle, I'm not sure I will use them now that they're on the car.

  24. Will be starting on those spindles next week, after I get everything up to the blaster. I have *heard* that they will work. I don't know if the Ranchero's spindles are the same as the same as the Grananda setup which I know does work.

Will let you know when I find out.

  25. Thanks for the tip Merc. I don't need it, but another Star owner visiting here might.

And just plain old thanks lobo.

LTD II, Ranchero, Cougar are the same, but I think the Granda ones are different. The ball joint tapers are the same as my 'Bird, and they're on ther car with the tie rods attatched, but haven't driven it. I'll be interested to know what you think of them.
