Hey guys, I am new here and I hope this is the right part of the board to ask questions. I bought a set (4) Halibrand "mag" wheels (16x12 six pin) from a guy about 20 years ago figuring that I would use them on something. Well, the boat bug got me and I have not been playing with the cars as much and have not kept up on prices and contacts where to buy and sell the good stuff. These wheels are now rare items and have never been mounted. They would be great for the GT-40--Cobra crowd as the wheels are from that period -- made in the 1960's. Been stored indoors and are in perfect condition. My question here is does anyone know of a fair place to get them appraised --- any comments or price thoughts welcome. I will try to attach a picture.
Ask HemiSteve. A lot depends on Diameter, Width and Offset. Some wheels are cool but totally unusable because of size.
To my knowledge, those are mostly Indy or Can-Am type wheels from the late sixties. ('67 '68 or so) Probably not what GT-40 or Cobra types will want to deal with, but very cool. I would suggest watching E bay under Magnesium wheels for a bit before deciding on a price for them.
Only worth what someone will pay for them ,Id start at 2000 and work from there ........Those are nice wheels and Ive never seen them before on the previous mentioned site .........Reread and you have 4 ,So double that ,You are only gonna sell to guys with dragsters or funny cars or pro street .Id list them as pairs for 2000 ......... probably get 1500 a pair .Thats only 750 per wheel and that is good price ..........
They're not really drag racing (dragster/funny car) type wheels. More of a Indy car, road racing type deal with knock offs. They're probably worth a bunch to someone restoring one of these cars. Larry T Shoulda known. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=407179 There's a little about them on Roadsters.com too.
Are you sure they are 16 inch? Sounds large for that era, I can picture them on a road race car, should bring a fair amount of money. Welcome to the HAMB!
Need to make sure I understand. These wheels are 12" wide and 16" in diameter? I'd suggest finding a forum dealing with Vintage Sports car racing (including F1, F5000 etc) You wheels are definitely KO style, and you may want to look for old Halibrand catalogs from the late 50s to mid 70s. They are not Cobra or GT40 wheels, but as previously suggested, will be of great interest to someone restoring a vintage race car. dj
They look alittle rough to me. Have you tried cleaning them up? They arent polished or painted? They just look like a bare casting.
Do not clean them up. Let the next guy do it. Just like an antique, magnesium rims with age can be worth more than some "cleaned up".
I always cringe when I see a guy at a swapmeet with a nice set of aged magnesium wheels, with a spot hastely shined up on the front where you cant hide it. " I just wanted to show what they could look like" Yeah, thanks bud...
I know, I will just sell them as is --- aged mag wheels are rare and I would only take away the value. I just laughed when someone wanted me to clean them up or paint them. I was thinking of some LED lights or spinners !!! lolololol
Yep... Polished Magnesium wheels get a beautifull transparent sheen to them if you let them weather for a while. A finish you **** up by rubbing polish on it. You wouldn't understand...
YEP! Now go read this Outbound http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44274 Especially rule #6
I guess you didn't get my joke on "aged mag wheels" with the reference to fine wine( er aged) lol.... yes the worst thing you could do to magnesium wheel or anything else magnesium would be to polish it. So yes I understand, when it comes to magnesium, LOL !
