I bought a 1962 M-code galaxie convertable M-code 390-401hp 4spd It has of ton of options power windows, top, seat, skirts, rear antennia, etc. Does anyone know much about these? I am a ******** chevy guy and need some info?
I know that the 62 was a strange year, and I've seen M-code Thunderbirds, but they only had 340hp with the tripower setup, and I belileve less than 200 were made. I had a 63-1/2 Galaxie with Q-code 427 and later raced an R-code factory lightweight 63-1/2 for a couple of years. I have only seen one M-code 390 in my whole life....................very rare. I'm pretty sure these motors came out in 61 and produced through early 62. I have seen more 406's cars than 401hp by a factor of 10. Here is a picture of one. You may want to ask this question on the FordForum site, they should be able to help as there are some Ford Fanatics over there. http://www.fordforums.com/f514/1962-ford-galaxie-500xl-thunderbird-special-406-a-41789/
Thanks, Ya thats what I am finding out that they are rare. The 401-hp M Code 390 was phased out near the time the 406 B and G Code engines became available around January of 1962. I have talked to some people on the 62 galaxie registry not to many people know much about them.
It sounds pretty rare, with just the power seats alone. I have a 64 z code 390, with a lot of options also, swingaway wheel, factory air, ps,pb pw, but I was surprised to find the vinyl top is the rarest option. any way, they ride great, and tons of room in the trunk! Even with my 390, is pulls hard! loads of torque!
Go to www.fordfe.com. Registering may be a bit ***bersome, but well worth it. Actually, there is one guy there who has one or two 62's that may be very much like yours. He goes by the name of "meangene" Lots of others there can help you too.
