I have a 1962 Impala with original steering wheel & custom tilt steering column. I bought the car like this but I have no horn. Question is, How do I get a horn kit to work? Is there an adapter kit? I have an original horn kit but it won't go with the column.
The column probably requires a plastic turn signal cancelling cam, which fits between the steering wheel and the turn signal switch. The original wheel has a cam that screws to the bottom of the wheel, and there is a horn contact ***embly that goes in from the top. Generally you have to remove the original horn contact and cancelling cam, and get the horn contact on the new cam to fit into the hole, then do some monkey business to connect the horn switch wire to the spring inside the new cancelling cam. It depends on how the horn switch works on the steering wheel, though. Pictures will help....see if you can figure out how to post pictures of the column, and the steering wheel, when it's taken apart. so we can see what you have.
You will probably have to find a diagram of the stock steering column on a 62 and see how the horn hooks up on it and then figure out how to make yours work. I don't have a manual that has that diagram that I know of. I'm thinking that somewhere between the early 60's and 69 when they went to the key on the column they changed the way the horn connected though.
Yes, they did when they added the lock plate in 1969. It required that the horn contact be inserted into the steering wheel from below.
