1962 mercomatic transmission

Just wanted to know if any one knows about these trasnmissions ?? My merc. has Low D1 &D2 whats the deal with it?? should I drive it in D1 is D2 like overdrive?? Let me know thanks

 

D2 is what is now D,there were no automatic overdrives back then. Jeff

 

great thanks seams to act funny when i leave it in D2 shutters off the line but when in low or D1 it is fine
