Hey guys :) Recently bought a 62 Pontiac Tempest with the 195 sitting in it. Changed out the plugs points etc drove fine for days. Eventually it started to stall once in awhile while driving it and decelerating, Then it was every time. Took it over to my father in laws garage and right as I pulled in I heard a little swooshing noise from the back in where the torque converter is. He said it could possibly be going out or needsomething adjusted. Any ideas or thoughts?

Give me your POCI member number or join & I'll mail ya a very clean '62 Tempest shop manual.
Also, both POCI & the Pontiac Museum in Pontiac IL have extensive libraries.

  5. Yes,a swoosh is not good. Something may need adjusting alright.

From 1961 through 1963, Tempests had the torque converter in the back of the car, hanging off the transaxle.

I bought a new Tempest in '63 with the 4 cylinder. I liked the car, but it was death on timing chains. kept breaking off the bumpers that were supposed to keep the chain from flapping around. Don't know about yours and i don't think I remember any Swoosing noise from mine. Mine was not an automatic.
