Has anyone used a power master starter iin a 63 390 galaxie? Or, have a suggestion of one that doesn't have that rediculous bendix end that is easy on..easy off? 6 hrs of different angles, skinned knuckles and the thing is still on my garage floor.
OK, here is the fix for the old style Ford Bendix starters: Get a newer,1965 or later style starter. It will have the wrong tooth count on the Bendix, so you need to order this Bendix to go on the newer style starter: www.marcsone.com --------starter drive #8800, costs about 20 bucks. Take off the Bendix thats on the newer starter, put this #8800 that has the correct tooth count on it that matches your older flywheel, and it will engage the flywheel from the front of the teeth instead of the rear like the old starter. Next....throw away that old rear engagement starter.
Those 3 bolt starters are a pain either way. In the Ford shops, all of us mechanics had a 3 foot long extension and a flex socket to get at those starter bolts.
thanks on this info...I'm still trying to get it into the bell housing--I have a feeling one time it will just slide in--but for now-PITA!
