Hello to all, I came across a 1964 Cadillac project with a so smooth running 429. I really dont know much about the history of the car. So im pretty much staring from ground zero. The first issue that I have is with the temp and fuel gauge. When the car is on it does not move from below the cold side and empty side. And when I turn the ignition switch to ACC on. I get the same results. Now here's the kicker. When I'm starting the car, as the engine rotates. I see the gauges rise. And soon as car is running they drop back down. I have no idea what kind of electrical has been done. And I'm far from being an electrician. I know the basics to get me by.I'm more mechanical type of guy. Any information will be highy appreciated. Thanks to you all. Henry
So heres the update, after finding some wiring diagrams online. I traced everything out and checked everything. Just to find out that the neutral safety switch was part of the same circuit. And the switch is broken( the piece where is slides over the gear selector bar to make the connections) So all I did was to slide the switch to the park postion, car fires up and fuel gauge works and temp gauge works. The only thing with the temp gauge is that it reads just below the cold side. It does move when the car is at operating temp.
Find the temp sender unit and ground the wire at the sender with a jumper wire and observer the temp gauge operation. If it goes way up then the sender unit is bad.
