I am using a 1964 Chevelle rear housing in a 48 Chevy coupe. The Coupe has parallel leaf springs and I have fabbed and welded new spring pads/mounts to the axle. My question is, "What is the best way to push the upper control arm bushings out of the housing?" I would prefer to not cut the ears off, but just extract the bushings. Anybody have any help, ideas, or suggestions?
If you don't mind smoke just burn them with a propane torch until the rubber falls out. Then you can collapse outer steel sleeve of bushing easily and remove.
Why remove them? If it is for looks its not worth the trouble. Just my opinion speaking as one who has had a coil spring rear in a leaf spring car. And some day someone will be looking for that rear and you will be talked into putting in a 9" Ford if you cut them off it ain't worth what it was. Pat
Grab your air hammer and a blunt chisel and go at them. A little on one side and a little on the other and there you go. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Sleeve the hole down to 1/4" for piloting the appropriate size holesaw to relieve some of the press of the oem bushing, this may make them easier to hammer out.
I had that same rear end under my 51 Merc and the ears beat holes in the hump over the rear end as it was lowered. If you aren't going to lower it or haul too many fat girls in the back seat at one time you might be ok though.
Just cut the hole dam ears off and be done with it, you have already fried parts off of it and re welded, you can't hurt it anymore than you already have!
Why not just take your die grinder with cut off wheel and remove the "ears" completely.? That's what I did.
Thank you all for the responses. As one of you guys pointed out, I’ve already modified the lower mounts (removed) so cutting the top ones off isn’t going to preserve its original use. Thanks again for all your help!
By leaving them on you can say you have a X Body rear that had A Body center installed because assembly line ran out of correct center section.
Thinking that it could be reused as a chevelle rear end at some future point. I was extremely careful when I cut the lower mounts off and with a little work could be reused. But with the ears gone, it was point of no return. There gone now!
