Trying to change the pan gasket on a 1964 Chevy c-10. I am assuming that it is the original 230, since the truck only has 40,00 on the odometer. Maybe its 140, but who knows. Anyway, the old gasket blew oil out the front of the gasket where the pan meets the lower surface of the timing cover. While taking the pan out, I noticed that the front of the pan has holes for 6 bolts in the front of it where it bolts to the timing cover. The timing cover is also threaded for said bolts. Someone had left the center 4 bolts out, and only used the outer two. Upon removing the old gasket, I quickly figured out that they had done so because the new gasket did not have holes through which you could install the bolts. I have looked up gaskets for several years of inline 6 motors, ranging from 60-67. They all call for Felpro #1819 Which has the solid rubber gasket for the front. It is molded with only 2 holes, on the outer ends of the gasket. Anyone else ever run into this? Am I missing something? Anyone else come up with a better part number? Thank you in advance!
Yep thats right. I just changed mine and it did not have the holes. You have to clean it up really good and use some good quality silicone.
I don't know when, but they changed that gasket design. I looked for the six bolt one and finally found some instructions explaining the change. Apparently unequal torque on the six bolt version would causes leaks. Mike Paul is right, clean it well and some judicious use of silicone will keep you leak free. Good luck.
Any chance that someone has produced a one piece unit like I have seen for the SBC.( like Felpro) Mine is leaking just enough to show on my cat yellow engine- and a little spot in front of the shop. More than likely not that lucky -just wondering ?
