Hello, I’m trying to put my 427 Cast headers on my car. I currently have hooker headers but I hate them and that’s another story; but I’m wondering what the best method of installation is. Should I try to sneak them in from the bottom? Or can I pull the motor out, bolt them on and then lower the engine back in? Also what starter should I use? I’ve got a 184 tooth flywheel. Thanks In advance.

It's been over 40 years when I removed the 427 from my '64 Galaxie, but am pretty sure I removed the stock headers first to allow plenty of room, and likewise I would install after the engine is in the car, especially since they are now worth big bucks. I am also pretty sure they were removed and installed from the top, but you'll know when you start the install.
The 153 tooth flywheel was used from '58-'64 along with the long shaft starter that pulls into the ring gear, while the 184 tooth flywheel is '65-up and requires the later shorter starter that pushes the Bendix into the gear, which also requires the later style bell housing.

  3. I don't think you need the later bell. as long as you get a three bolt 65 starter.

Might want a mini starter or at least a later model starter with the terminal on the end. Some times the stock starter positive stud will interfere with the iron manifolds!

  5. Some place I seen a picture of Boneyard holding a set of those cast hedders. He ought to know how to install them.

I bought these from a man that had two sets, one for the 64 and below. Those , 64 set, had a notch cut out and for clearance. While it couldn’t be seen, and didn’t actually hurt anything, it cut their value by quite a bit.
