I have an all original 64 impala it used to do stock drags back in the day. It has the original 283 hooked up to the powerglide two speed. The speed equipment that was on it was taken off when sold to the next owner. It has only 20,000 miles on it. Annnd its a four door. Could someone give me some vintage speed part ideas? I want to use Hilborn mechanical injection, Isky cam kit. Thats all i know for positive i want on the car. im pretty easily swayed at the moment so give me ideas?
Stock drags in a 4 door?Kinda heavy for that wasn't it? Injection would cost you a foutune.Go with what was available in 64.Two fours, magneto, headers, double hump heads.
Got some companies i coud go with? The reason im going with injection is my grandpa gave me a classic Hilborn mechanical from back in the day he had on his nova 283. He says he doesnt have any pics but im looking Hell if i no on the four door stock drags... maybe to be unique
Lots of four door drag racers in Stock class, but one of my favorites happened to be a Pro Stocker. Not quite so many in P/S.
That car looks like a great starting point for a fun street car. Like ClayMart said, there were a lot of four doors in Stock in the '60s & early '70s. Any non-factory available modifications would have bumped it into Modified Production. I ran a '64 Impala SS, 327 with a 4-speed in C/Modified Production. Those classes were based on weight divided by cubic inches. Your car would probably have ended up in D/MP. The Hilborns that you're talking about would have put the car in a Gas Class and it wouldn't have been competitve, so no one was likely to do it back then. It's been my experience that unless you're going to spend money on the heads and a much better cam you don't want to go with a large capacity fuel delivery system on a 283. As for the Hilborns they look cool but to be honest that is too much fuel for the engine without mods and no one would have run them on the street on a four door back then. (Except a few serious street racers who went for the sleeper look and didn't care if they were really streetable for more than a couple of hours.) If you run them on your car nowdays most old-timers will shake their heads and think WTF? Just my two cents of course.
Well thanks for the input Thom Mead and thats a nice pic Claymart and now that im thinkin about it i thought i cood make an assload of cash selling the injection cause it is from i think 1963???? So it is a classic... i think ima go with 3x2 setup and probably some forged internals. but semi-classic cause i want it as old school as possible. By the way is dougs headers stil in existance??
Ya but from what he told me it fits only sb chevys... I'm prob gunna keep and throw it on a future project. Just needs to be a sb chevy, and I'm big on stock motors so that means ima have three chevys..... I wanna mix it up a bit Anyone know wher I could maybe find an old 1952 nash? jw?
Man you are all over the place! What you need to do is ,kick back , relax ,and think this over a little bit .. You don't have a job ,so start slow and read a lot of stuff here on the H.A.M.B , Then decide which direction you want to take your car or truck, try to work on one for now and see how that goes first... Maybe just get the 64 on the road and enjoy it for awhile , you have a lot of time in front of ya....Enjoy the ride !
Thanks man thing is i need it done soonish so i can start on a hopped up '49 dodge four door old school custom for my dads 60th birthday. He's 54 so time is of the essence. Reason that is important is it was his first car and he wishes he never sold it so ya i wanna give him back some of his past
