About a year ago, my BFF Nads found this car left for dead, in a local tow yard. I have since gutted the rat/rac****/tazmanian devil infested interior. Replace broken drivers window. Got the engine to run and given it a good once over. Very minor rust, on the San Jose body. Paint is toast! Minor tune, oil change and a carb rebuild brought engine to life. Came with a garbage 2BBL Rochester carb and adapter plate. So glad I had an extra 4GC, on the shelf. Trouble is, transmission slips in D and no reverse. Hoping that a oil and filter change may help it out. Although, a 50 yr old trans may need new seals. Fluid is bright red and full. Trans is the most likely the reason it got towed, in the first place. Oh well, after owning 5 of these '64 Rocket Sleds, won't be the first trans I rebuild. If the trans has to come out, might as well take the whole engine ***y and detail the motor compartment, as well as paint the car, before anything goes back on or in. Found a donor car up north, with a nice black interior. Awaiting new weather or not he can deliver to Floriduh. Wish me luck!
WTF?? Cannot upload any pictures?? Something about a token problem?? Had the same issue on Cl***ic Oldsmobile Forum, which has identical format. Never had problems like this before. JT
OK, downloaded all the pics to Photobucket. Let's try this again. Yes, the red wheels are so 2008, but all I had to mount up the 15" tires. Hate these cars with 14".
When I ran the car auctions about 10 years ago I bought a nice white one ran great except when you took a sharp curve then the trans would slip for a couple seconds .The fluid was up and nice and red .I drove it all summer and sold it to a guy in Ala. who was up here vacationing here and saw it .Didn't they have thoses ****py slim jim tramissions then?. Other wise it was a pretty car inside and out. Bruce.
I had a '64 98 with Raders, gold line tires and Bellflower pipes, was a neat car. The transmissions are super odd, but they work, usually. Very nice roofline on this one. Hope you got bumpers with it too, they're super tough to come by. Looks solid though, what are the plans?
Plans have changed, but most logical thing to do is yank motor and trans. Clean up engine bay and motor. Rebuild/repair trans, yes, they can be finicky, but have owned 5 of these beasts and with a little patience, run ok. Shift linkage adjustment, super critical!! 2" lowered springs from Jamco. (refuse to EVER cut coils on my cars again. Ruined my Starfire) Working a deal on a complete black interior, from Illinois, so exterior color needs to be something like metallic silver. Maybe with a black top. Just want a nice cruiser, with a little at***ude. May flip in the future to fund my Starfire convertible restoration. Want to do this car justice. Oldsmobiles were the working man's Cadillac. Upholstry, on these 98's is just as nice as a Coupe DeVille. Here are a few examples, I have saved, that get my juices flowing. JT
This crew is still plenty pissed about Nads jacking their homestead! I'm having a flashback of you perusing the Rocket-THM adapter at Tony's place last summer, and I have a rebuilt 400 taking up precious shelf space over here...
I have those bandits at my back porch every night ,with a baby possem, I figure they gotta eat too .Fun to watch .I raised about 4 or 5 different one from babys. They follow you like cats after they get to know you that's when they are raised from babies not the full grown ones lol. Bruce.
Been busy as a beaver, lately, trying to finish/detail engine. Also, maybe this thread should be closed, because, started a new one, shortly after this. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1964-98-2-dr-coupe-w-th400-upgrade-project.865598/ Either way, engine compartment is done, trans is done and squirting final coat of Ford Torch Red, on the engine tomorrow. That color seemed top be closest match to '64 Oldsmobile 394 Red. All 4 bbl cars had red engines, while 2 bbl versions were painted a turquoise/green shade. JT
I know where a 4 door 98 like this is, solid, better than decent. Looks like it spent it''s life in a carport or garage, until theoriginal owner died, then sold to a junkyard as it probably needing some tweeking after sitting up. Same color, has a A/M F/M radio, and a tilt wheel I think. In the southeast.
Randy, thanks for the heads up. Can you PM the info to me?? In the 90's, I had a 98 4 dr hardtop. Was in imaculate condition. Only 34k original miles, with plastic seat covers, still in place. Resued it out of over 15 years of storage. Had to sell it, when I got divorced. Regret it, to this day.
My mom and my wife both had Super 88's around the same time. My mother was light Wedgewood blue with a white roof and my wifes was a very dark teal green color. They weren't fast by any stretch but I'd line my mother's Olds up beside Mia's Olds and we'd have power window races with each of them. Hey, we were young and bored.
Took a long time to reply, the owner of the yard po***ed away and things are finally getting sorted out There are 2 whole cars and maybe a 3rd parts car. Let me know if your'e interested and I'll get contact info to you
I have a 64 98 4 door I wanted a big more door because we hosted a lot of exchange students and all of our daily drivers were small at the time. I ended up putting fast bags on it and a 383 abc with a 700r4 because I could not keep a trans in it
