I have a friend with a 64 sport fury that wants to put a straight axle under it.

What would be the best one to use?

    It doesn't have a frame.
A subframe will have to be added then the springs then the axle.
If he doesn't already know what's going to be involved he probably won't ever finish it.
    Too bad.
There goes another survivor all to shit.
A friend of mine had one of those new in highschool.
Great cruiser car, too heavy and 'luxurious" for a race car, even a poser race car.

    Just my opinion
    YMMV

I think 1965 was the first big Chrysler sized Fury - that said the straight axle still seems out of character.

He's correct about the subframe to some affect, they are unibodies, Ive seen some where they leave the K-frame and make some mounts for the springs but if you remove the K-frame then you will have to fabricate some kind of engine mounts and fabricate a crossmember between the front frame rails. I still don't get the comment "too heavy and 'luxurious" for a race car, even a poser race car" You could get a Max Wedge in a Sport Fury and noone here can dispute the drag racing history of the Max Wedge cars, they ruled. Someone on here had a mile high 64 or 65 Dodge wagon with a straight axle. IMO why doesn't he just crank up the torsion bars in the front, that's what most of the drag cars did back in the day.

Just seems funny because Plymouths from 1964 are landmark performance cars. Engines were shipped out the backdoor to race teams for Daytona that year.. a little misfit known as the 426 Hemi. They came in 1-2-3. :D

But yes they were quite plush and stylish for their time. :D

I completely agree! Max wedge sport fury's ruled the drag stip! A 63' is one of my favorite muscle cars ever made.....Crank up the torsion bars if that is the look your going for. That would probably give you better lift @ launch any way? The gasser sraight axle is all about weight transfer, correct? So over tensioned torsion bars would have an equal or better effect it would seem. That is if he even plans on draging the car? If he's just going for the look of a sraight axle "which is cool" Than He should get the hands on help of some one experienced. Just a thought from a newbe.

The "SPORT FURY" was the up scale model with (usually) fancier, heavier trim, bucket seats, consoles, thicker insulation etc.
Put a same engine Sport Fury up against that lighter weight Satelite or Belvedere and you know what would happen.

    That's all I meant.
I know SOME MODELS of Mopars were the killer cars to race and some were stylin' to cruise in, that's all.

This is obviously qualified since the poster didn't say how much of a Sport Fury he's working with.
It might be someone else's stripped out parts car, and if so, have fun with it!

Thanks for the info, I pass it on.

    Some history on the car.

My buddy was coming back home over the holiday weekend and stopped to look at a 64 Sport Fury for sale in a small town on a country road. The car he stopped to look at is an all numbers matching max wedge 426 stage 5 with delete mufflers, back seat, radio, heater etc. But it does have the bucket seat and center console option and some other stuff for street use. Runnin, driving clear titled Texas car. He also got another 64 Sport Fury max wedge 426 car with a single 4 on an aluminum intake as a parts car! That's the car he is going to straight axle.

This friend has a hot rod shop of his own and builds motor's for some NHRA people. He's quite capable of building a new frame for the car. And yes he will drag it! He currently has an alky injected corvair that some mag is doing a story on.

    Thanks again.

Look here at Landy's Dodge with a beam axle from back then.
    http://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/landys64.html
Should look a lot like the Plymouth.
I still think it needs a sub frame to live past chuck holed street duty...
Unless it's going to be a real trailered to the track 1/4 miler...

    That '67 is WILD!
There was a guy at the Mopar drags here in Bremerton last summer with a street driven, altered wheelbase '65 Dodge in primer. Pretty damn cool.....but I can't remember if it had a straight axle or not......

And Big Dad, I'm not a Mopar nut. Some of the stuff he was telling me is a little new to me. He's excited and talking fast and I wasn't in a mopar drag car of the sixties state of mind at the time of our conversation. I'll see the car soon and git sum pics.

My friend has already verified the numbers from the car. It is what it is. His own words were it's a drag car from the factory that someone added the sport fury option to race on the street.

    I hear yah ..
    IF ... and I SAY IF !!!!
it is a real max wedge car (real, real, real hard to tell)

He is either rich beyond normal resources .. or a god damm fool

Plenty of old crap to ruin .sell it to some knuckle head restoration buff --

buy another one .. cut the crap out of it --still have plenty of money
    to work on project

" there are more max wedge cars now in 1990,
    then there was in the 60's " . . . . . .Dale Kirk

  28. still laughing with that one..... and reminded me of a newspaper ad I saw 15 years ago for a Dodge Road Runner...

Your friend found two max wedge cars? As far as I know Max wedges weren't single 4 barrels, they had crossrams and came with cutouts but still had mufflers. What did he give for the cars? I can't imagine with all the Mopar hype someone wouldn't know what they are worth.
